Grand Hotel: Good choice for Niamey

In my opinion its better than Sofitel but of course no Four Seasons, the Grand is where everyone heads for a nice sunset beer. Save yourself the trouble and just stay there, as you can't really do much better.

Sofitel Gaweye: Niamey's Best

Apparently this was the best place to stay in Niamey at the time of my trip, which was Feb 2002.

The rooms were basic, no frills... there was a tv, fridge... everything worked. No problems with the water supply in the shower or anything like that. Just don't expect similar standards of Sofitel in Paris or wherever.

Also, I noticed some mosquitoes when I open the room door to go out, they seem to hang out by the door. May want to bring along mosquito repellent.

Was so funny 'cos I remember looking in the fridge and there weren't really much to choose from the mini bar... but I was just in Paris right before I came to Niger, and met an italian friend who'd brought me Parmiggiano Reggiano all the way from Parma... so I flew that into Niger and stored it in the fridge at my hotel! So there I was, in Africa, eating fresh Italian Parmesan brought in all the way from Europe. How's that for a slice of globalization!

Great view of the pool and the river from my room window, where I spent quite a bit of time just observing the local folk.

However, after doing some search on the internet, I think they've actually relocated or renovated their facilities from when I was there so it should be much better now.

240 rooms, air-conditioning, pool, tennis courts, two restaurants, two bars, nightclub, conference room, boutiques.
