''bushcamp'': Camping under African skies

by sachara

Crossing Nigeria from west to east, we camped four times along the road.
Two times between Ilorin and Abuja and two times between Bauchi and the border with Cameroon.

These ''bushcamps'' under African skies were sometimes very sweaty, dusty and tiring and sometimes very enchanting and relaxing.

The bushcamp just west of Biu was enchanting, at a scenic spot with a wonderful sunset and sunrise.

ECWA Guesthouse: Jos, camping in the garden

by sachara

The ECWA guesthouse is a quiet and peaceful Protestant missionary centre. It has dorm rooms with shared bathrooms and there must also be rooms with bathrooms and hot water.

During our visit there was a big meeting in the guesthouse of all district priests all over Nigeria. That's why there were no rooms and beds available fro us. So we had to camp in the garden.

It was not a really bad place for camping. And we were happy with the first rather cool nights in weeks.

During our stay the shared toilets and bathrooms had no water and were not very clean. We had to fetch our water from a well in the garden.

Abuja Sheraton Hotel & Towers: Abuja, after the bushcamps the Sheraton

by sachara

Instead of camping at a parkinglot for old Sheraton buses, we could also stay in an hotel room for half the price and with free entrance to the swimmingpool. So I did !!

The hotel has a nice green atrium, a lot of shops, some restaurants and an lovely open-air bar near the pool.

And just 300 M west of the Sheraton Hotel you can find many other restaurants (here I had excellent Lebanese food !) and cheaper internet options than in the business centre of the hotel.

Gateway hotel: Abeokuta, under the mango tree

by sachara

The Gateway Hotel in Abeokuta has rather basic rooms with airco and bathroom for 20$. The blocks with the rooms are scattered in a large garden. It was also allowed to camp in this garden.

In the garden was a huge mango tree. The most days we spent on the terrace in the shade under this mango tree. Sportfacilities, internetcafes and streetstalls are nearby.

Pennisula guest motel: Home away from home

Stay at one of the top hotels,...

by kucha

Stay at one of the top hotels, rather than anything in the 'second class category.' The drop-off, as is the case in most emerging markets, between deluxe and standard rooms, is staggaring. The Sheraton is a good choice in Lagos.
$200
