Novotel Saint-Gilles: A moderately-priced hotel near the beach

by mikelisaanna

The Novotel is located across the street from the beach betwen Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and Hermitage-les-Bains on the Western Coast of Reunion. The hotel's location is excellent if you have a car. It is convenient to the major coast roads and only about a 5-minute drive from the center of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains. A sandy beach is located right across the street, less than 50 meters from the hotel's gate.

We stayed at the Novotel for about 6 nights. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and put up with our mediocre French language skills. Some spoke English, but not all, so a bit of French is very useful. We particularly liked the kids program, which our daughter Anna participated in during two of the days we were there. She couldn't speak French with the other kids, but they still had fun playing volleyball, badminton and soccer, as well as having snacks and doing arts and crafts.

Our room at the Novotel was decently sized, but mediocre in terms of maintenance and furnishings. The door was scraped up and the metal closet doors had some rust. The furnishings were made out of some sort of artificial material that I assume was chosen for its durability. However, the room had what we needed, including a television, heat, air conditioning, and hot and cold water, so it was fine for our needs. We spent very little time in the room, aside from sleeping and changing clothes.

The common areas of the hotel were nice. There are two swimming pools, two indoor/outdoor bar areas with plenty of seats and tables, and two restaurants. Wifi is available in the lobby and bar areas. There is no gift shop, so you have to go about 200 meters down the road to a small shopping mall to buy things such as sunscreen and postcards.

The breakfast buffet was good, with both hot and cold items. Lunch was served at the poolside restaurant/bar, and was also very good. The dinners were served at the main restaurant. The food at dinner was fine, but overpriced. There are a number of local restaurants within 5 minutes' drive that have better food at cheaper prices.

Overall, we were please with our stay at the Novotel. Our only complaints were that the rooms need some refurbishment, there is no internet available in the rooms, and the dinners were too expensive. In our opinion, the friendly staff, the excellent location, and the nice common areas and grounds more than made up for the hotel's shortcomings.

Les Aloes (Cilaos): Another lucky finding

by Belsaita

Another lucky finding: a new place (built in 1999) but with lots of charm. The house was built following the traditional creòle architecture. Roby and Faby bought the hotel in 2004 and redecorated all at their own taste... and I've to say they have a great taste! The rooms are painted in bright colors, have great views, and all was spotless clean.

The place is small and more like a guest house than a hotel. 8 double room, 1 triple, and 1 than may accommodate 2 adults and 2 children.

You may relax in the "panoramic" terrace, or if it's cold, in the common room with fireplace. The breakfast with homemade products was basic but tasty.

Relais des Cimes (Hell-Bourg, Cirque de Salazie): nice small hotel

by Belsaita

We were touring Reunion for a week, without booking any hotel in advance as the weather was very changing. We preferred to "play by ear" depending on the weather forecast and on what we found on the way. Last part of the trip was supposed to be 2 nights in Hell-Bourg and our last night somewhere else... but... we enjoyed so much our stay, and the area, that we stayed in the Relais des Cimes our last night in Reunion as well.

Hell-Bourg is the best place to stay in the Cirque of Salazie, and the hotel Relais des Cimes is located in the heart of this charming Creole village. There are 29 en suite rooms, located in 2 nearby buildings. Each room has a ceiling fan, TV and telephone. Everything was clean, and it was a nice "home" to come back after a intense day hiking. IMHO, it's more than OK for a basic mountain hotel, but if you want luxury better go somewhere else.

The restaurant of the hotel has a good reputation. We had diner twice there (it was not much choice in town anyway,). Service was quite "cold" but the food was tasty, and the portions huge.

Novotel C: Reunion Summer

by jacsilversurfer

I recieved an upgrade to this Hotel in L'Hermitage Beach. I found the staff at reception to be really helpful and they had a good try at speaking English. The beach out the back was very pleasant being a lagoon fringed by palms with cafes dotted around. As an Aussi, I am spoilt for good beaches, but I loved a chance to relax by the clear water and have a grande creme ad lib.The meals were good at the hotel and they had a modern jazz group once a week. The shopping centre was a walk away and I could by a French Elle or sigh over Kenzo sports wear.If you can get a specially cheap package you could do worse. I had fun.

Good pool, Great bar,Plenty of activities that are free. Bus at end of street to travel into St Denis or St Pierre .

Novotel St. Gilles: an average 4-star hotel

by MrBill

Regular hotels on La Reunion are simply way too expensive. For this reason alone, I would avoid going there. There is no value for money. The hotels are standard business hotels. The pools are nothing special nor is the beach. I am not complaining, but it is not a 'beach resort' hotel that I would return to, and at EUR300 per night for double-occupancy, it is pricey enough that guests should demand a better standard than is available in St. Denis. Be warned.

Hell-Bourg: Kreolhauser

by MrBill

This hostel had pretty simple rooms. The bathrooms were small. However, the food and drink were abundant and very good. Usually you get fed some variation of Carrie - which consists of rice, beans, meat in a stew like sauce. The meat can be chicken, pork, beef or spicey sausage, and they also serve it as a fish dish. Mainly we drank red wine and water.
