by thelittlevoice I got a room for RFr15000 for a double. The room has no TV. The hot water works quite fine though it takes quite a while the first time you use it. The restaurant offers good food and nice view. Lasange there is really good(costed RFr3000). There's an internet too costing RFr500 an hour. The electricity stops every once in a while but I could barely notice it except when I was using their computer. Staff are helpful and friendly. view from the cottage by Bonobo2005 This resort out of Kibuye town right on Lake Kivu has some excellent s/c cottages with satellite TV, an upmarket restaurant and offers boatrides. There's actually not much more to do than relax, swim and have a talk with yuppie NGO-staff or the local rich that spends their weekends here.
Well, you can use the place if you badly need a treat; otherwise I would not recommend it for ordinary travellers. The location however is almost perfect!!! There are other places to stay in Kibuye. You can always come here for just a lazy afternoon. A cottage (huge bed) cost $23 but I negotiated $16. Keep also in mind the high additional cost for food! Palm Beach on Lake Kivu by Bonobo2005 Gisenyi, located along Lake Kivu, is divided in a busy upper part, where local life concentrates, and the quiet Lakeside, where huge colonial houses on big compounds are build along an avenue lined by palmtrees. If you can afford it, you have to stay on the Lakeside, with at least 2 mid range hotels.
The other one is Palm Beach Hotel, more upmarket that has a private beach, canoes, relaxing chairs and windscreens to protect you from too curious eyes. The rooms are self contained and some have satellite TV and private balconies. However I took the cheapest room for a night (because I wanted to see Champions League that night) and it's not very good value. Probably the most expensive offer better value. The restaurant and bar are excellent but very expensive. Cheapest double room $24, but I bargained down to $12 (low season). sunset from Regina Hotel by Bonobo2005 Gisenyi, located along Lake Kivu, is divided in a busy upper part, where local life concentrates, and the quiet Lakeside, where huge colonial houses on big compounds are built along an avenue lined by palmtrees. If you can afford it, you have to stay on the Lakeside, with at least 2 mid range hotels.
One of them is Regina, with big and very airy rooms but not s/c. Around the building are very nice and quiet sittingsarea's. You will be served while relaxing at the lake. However, this stretch has NO sandy beach. The restaurant is quite good, but service erratic and slow (or maybe I should say: not what were used to in the West ?!). In my opinion better value than Palm Beach Hotel. Price single $10, double $14.

peaceful dawn..view from sur ile to nord ile by nsbm Located near Kibuye, only 10minutes by the owners boat transfer from kibuye town or Gisenyi, these iles are wondefully placed just off the mainland in the isle studded bay of Kibuye. They are two tear drop shaped isles ,nord and sur joined by a stone causeway. Nord is where the manger/staff reside with the pier, restaurant and volleyball facilities. sur isle is all yours with a spacious camp, bedding pillow, tables and chairs and nightly campfire at dinner time. Towels, toilet paper and water are provided and a proper clean modern flush-sitdown commode is provide in stalls. Electricty is personally provided by a car battery and hung lite...really cool No need for showers as the clean health hazrd free warm waters of lake Kive are lapping at your camping site. I am not an outdoorsy type and being my first at 'camping' this was a real luxury tent experience. Off the beaten track and definitely worth it....

Centre Pastoral Notre dame & helpful staffer by nsbm A catholic run guesthouse in Ruhengeri, the room and bathrooms are great value, clean, spacious with hot water ensuite tiled showers. It is only a five minute walk to town and on clear days all the Volcanoes can be seen from the terrace balcony & your room windows! The gorilla ORTPN at Kinigi is One hour away ( but only 13km on poor roads but picturesquely adventurous) by private transport which you can arrange from kigali or the day before in ruhengeri. The staff are great and food at the restaurant is affordable and scrumptuous..

View from the garden...great terrace by nsbm Well located on the northern shores of Lkae Kivu and close the Congo frontier, hotel Regina is run by a local Rwandaise Known as Madame. The room are large and clean with en-suite or shared facilities both at affordable rates. The lounge downstairs has fast internet access and a high ceiling restaurant. The terrace and garden tables however are ambiently colonial and serene for diesting all the great tasty food....try the fillet fish dishes...yummy. The Parc du Lac across the road is well manicured and offers vistas acroos the lake to Goma,Congo and provides a safe cove for swimming on the rocky shores. Great Sunsets. The town is just 10 minutes walk uphill. The frontier is alos only 15 mins up the road.

rondavels on Lkae Muhazi @ Gahini by nsbm On the bank of calm Lake Muhazi in eastern rwanda this lodging is a welcome stop if you have made a northern circuit of Akagera Park and are headed back to Kigali. Here you can safely reach before dusk if the latter was your route earlier in the day. The location and views are stunning. Lots of water activities including boating, swimming and birdwatching are on offer. The lake is disease and croc free. Just across the water is the Presidents Holiday Home so the company is grand. The place along with the Gahini guest House is run by the episcopal church. Accomodation is by camping or in 2-bedroom well equipped rondavels....definitely worth a stop after ANP

terrific terrace! Hotel Ibis by nsbm Located on the main street in Butare's centre this hotel is quite luxurious for tis location. belgian owned since colonial times standards are high. the rooms are double bed apartments very homely rather than hotel style. Large double beds, bathrooms with showers (hot water!) and a seperate sitting day bed area back to a private enclosed patio makes this place good value for money. Its all in african colonial style with heavy wood and color motifs
Location ,location and the terrace restaurant open to main street provides a fantastic theatre of the street. However it initially is restricting as street kids approach the edges and beg but are not allowed to enter the compound so you are safe, but they are not intimidating or pushy. Then once that passes you become the theatre for them! the ambience is nice and locals as well as expats fill the terrrace for dinner and lunch....get there early if you want a table outside Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Main Street ButarePhone: 250 530335Website: campionibis@hotmail.com

Hotel Regina by Maggus Situated in the lower part of Gisenyi at the corniche next to all colonial villas one can find this building dating from the belgian period. Constructed and appearing like a hospital at first impression it has obviously seen better times because some parts are in need of reparation. Rooms are quite reasonably priced at about 8-15 EUR. The furniture dates back from the same time as the building , so don't let yourself fall on your bed...A complete travel back in time.
Food is quite good, the attached garden has nice pavillons where to sit and just let time float.... Theme: HotelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: Corniche about 800 m to the congolese Border.
