Calao club: African bungelow at the Atlantic
  • Satisfaction:
  • The hotel/club is close to the airport in the Dakar suburb Ngor. Conveniently located if you want to avoid city traffic. There are a number of nice restaurants as well as the old part of Ngor village in walling distance. The hotel is directly at the Atlantic - you can hear the ocean from most of the bungalows (it also means it can get rather cool at night) free wifi internet in the lounge of the next door hotel which belongs to the same family. The bungalows are not overly luxurious, but clean and pleasant. Not all of them have mozzie nets but I suppose the night air is cold enough to keep the bugs from biting anyhow. There is a bit of a sandy stretch where you can sunbathe (and the pool area, of course), but the oceanfront is covered with rocks

the bungalows have an African theme, each of them painted individually. The club is popular with local visitors as well

    Tama Lodge: Mbour paradise
  • Satisfaction:
  • I've spent ten days in this lovely place, you have to go there especially for the food, they have a new chief and the food was very good and creative.

The place is amazing, this is a small hotel directly on the beach, the room was confortable and you are under the palmtrees, feet in the sand and you have all around you african art (furniture and statues).

It was quiet and protected but you can also at the daylight see senegalese people training and playing football, doing "lutte senegalaise" playing music.

    I recommend trying to live...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I recommend trying to live with a family like I did. In Ziguinchor I stayed one night at le Flambloyant Hotel.
Price was 150 french francs per night in 1999, it hasn't really changed in 8 years.

Very quiet, refreshing pool, Quiet airco. Nice large shower.

    The Hôtel du Djoudj
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Hôtel du Djoudj is the only hotel located at the headquarters for Djoudj National Park. All other hotels and hostels in the area are a few miles away. Travelers planning on visiting Djoudj National Park will find the hotel conveniently located, and a pleasant place to stay.

My only complaint with this hotel was that there was no hot water in the shower. This was only a problem with my particular room, however, as others in my group did have hot water.

The Hôtel du Djoudj has rooms that are very basic, but clean and comfortable. Although the rooms have air conditioning, it cannot be used for much of the day. The hotel relies on a generator for electricity, and it is turned off during the day until about 5:00 p.m., and is turned off again between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m. Therefore, the air conditioning cannot be run throughout the night either, but nights are generally comfortable in the Sahel. In addition, anyone who has to get up during the night will need a flashlight or candle.

Guests can relax by the hotel's swimming pool and enjoy the landscaped gardens. For those wishing to explore the national park, the hotel has six pirogues that can be hired for rides to the pelican colony. Guests can also hire the hotel's mountain bicycles, or even its vehicle for longer rides deep into the park.

    Le Gîte d'Étape
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Le Gîte d'Étape is a small hotel run by a French woman who moved to Senegal many years ago to open a hotel. It is one of the few good hotels in the small town of Richard Toll, and in my opinion, its most appealing feature is its location right on the south bank of the Senegal River. During afternoon siestas after birdwatching all morning in the heat, I relaxed in a lounge chair in the shade of a large tree and watched the river flow by.

Le Gîte d'Étape is one of the most expensive hotels in Richard Toll, but the rooms are very basic (but clean), and lack such amenities as telephones and televisions. The air conditioning can be unpredictable at times as well. Despite these minor inconveniences, I found Le Gîte d'Étape to be a good hotel and I enjoyed my stay there.

The restaurant specializes in French and local cuisine, and I thought the food, especially the fish, was excellent.

In addition to relaxing on the bank of the river, guests can swim in or sunbathe next to the swimming pool, stroll the landscaped grounds, or arrange a boat ride on the river.

    Le Relais de Kaolack
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Located southwest of downtown Kaolack on the banks of the Saloum River, Le Relais de Kaolack is one of the newest and best hotels in the city. It is popular with the many tourists who use Kaolack as a transition point between Dakar and northern Senegal, and countries to the east and south.

The hotel is on the outskirts of Kaolack, and to get there, visitors must pass through run-down industrial areas and neighborhoods that do not look very safe. Fortunately, there is a large police station right at the entrance to the hotel.

Le Relais de Kaolack has 30 air-conditioned rooms in detached one- and two-story bungalows situated on landscaped grounds. The rooms are basic but clean, but lack such amenities as televisions and telephones.

Because the hotel is right on the Saloum River, it can be overrun with mosquitos at night. Hotel employees offer to spray the rooms in the evening, and mosquito nets are definitely recommended here.

For its guests' entertainment, the hotel has billiards, tennis, and a swimming pool. There is also an outdoor bar next to the pool, and a restaurant which offers decent food, especially the local fish.

    Hôtel La Résidence
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hôtel La Résidence is a 1950s colonial hotel that looks as if it were the set of a Humphrey Bogart movie. The common areas have slow-moving ceiling fans, the floors are tiled in black and white, African artifacts are scattered throughout, potted palm trees give a tropical air, and the walls are covered with period photographs depicting local events and visiting dignitaries from the 1950s and earlier.

The bar, which resembles that in the movie Casablanca, has a vintage zinc bar, a billiard table, and a piano. Its most distinctive feature, however, is the outdoor seating area in the hotel's central courtyard which contains a full-grown palm tree and is surrounded by two stories of wrought-iron balconies

Hôtel La Résidence has 32 rooms, each equipped with air conditioning, television, direct-dial international telephone service, and individual bathroom. Three suites have internet access in addition to their other amenities. All rooms and suites open onto one of two central courtyards that overlook either the reception area or bar area below.

HOTEL TERANGA ****: A very nice hotel to relax
  • Satisfaction:
  • Is a very beatiful area withaprox. 30 two floors bungalows, in a "tropical HOBBITS style"
The gardens and the grass are in very good conditions and the rooms are always very clean.

Don`t drink nothing with ice. don`t drink water from the tap.

The hotel area is very secure, but , if you take a walk outside, and if you are a girl, be carefull with the locals. They are very poor and they follow you all the time, they touch you and asking for money. They never leave you alone.
The best thing is asking for help in the front desk of the hotel, and they send someone with you.

They have pool, a bar/ restaurant in the beach, a restaurant near the pool, telephone in the room, colour tv.

The people from the hotel are very nice.
