Auberge chez Nizam: One of the cheapest places to stay in Dakar
It doesn't have much of a atmosphere, but if you need a cheap place in the center it is a good choice. Rooms from 10000 CFA.
Unique Quality: The older men running the place hast a lot of good information.

Furnished house for tourist
Dakar is a very safe city for tourists. You will see people walking at any given time of the day and night, including women alone. The people are a little bit pushing when they want to sell you things but the are very nice in general. May and June is the perfect time to go, right before the raining season. Thus, not too hot, not too humid and not a lot of mosquitos.
If you budget is tight and most importantly if you want to see more about the people, the culture, the different neighborhoods you can stay in of the many furnished house managed by the local. It’s safe and you will in there most of the amenities you can expect in a hotel but it's much cheaper. Try this web site : www.alouer-au-senegal.com
They even have a slide show pictures of Dakar on the web site. Pretty interesting. The place is located in a nice neighborhood. The manager is very nice and very helpful in helping tourists go places and find things. He speaks English. If needed he will come get you form the airport for a small fee.

Via Via Hostel
I reserved this budget hostel by internet, as it's the closest to the airport and I was leaving for Mali on the next morning very early, so I wasn't really interested to visit Dakar that time (I visited it on the way back).
This is a small hostel with an inner garden and small simple rooms.
Unique Quality: They sent me a taxi to the airport, to pick me up on my arrival and take me to the hostel. At the end the taxi fare happened to be about 2-3 times the normal fare for that kind of trips, but sometimes is good to hava someone "known" at the airport when you first arrive to a country...

Hotel St Louis Sun
I didn't sleep here, just entered to look for a room but they were full, so I went to Oceanic Hotel instead. But this little local hotel seemed to me a good choice if you want to sleep in the center.
Unique Quality: Rooms for about 30 euros

Hotel Oceanic
This is a medium range OLD hotel in the centre of Dakar. It is a fair value if you are just looking for a clean bed at walking distance of the centre. It has probably been a charming colonial hotel, but now needs a good refurbishing. Rooms for about 30 euros.

The Seck family homestay: Homestay in Dakar
I stayed in Dakar at the Seck family who rents out three spare rooms in their house. It´s a great deal: for 15 euros I got a nice room with a private bathroom. The house is some 20-30 minutes from the center.

Hotle Poulagou: Hotel Poulagou
Why stay in central Dakar? its busy and dangerous at night. Yoff is a seaside oasis of calm in the suburbs of Dakar.
Take a taxi to Yoff and find hotel Poulagou. Its by the most beautiful beach and is safe any time of day to roam around.
Hassan and Malik are the guys that work there during the day and their father owns it. If you can get 3/4 people together Hassan can arrange a guided day trip to Lac Rose for basically the cheapest price I saw anywhere.

Continental Hotel Dakar: Continental Hotel Dakar
First we tried another hotel, however this one didn't have any rooms free. Then we went to the Continental Hotel. The first room we became, the light didn't work. Then we got anohter room. It looked like there hasn't been done much the last 20 years.
Unique Quality: We tried for a room with a fan, but only rooms with airco where available. The airco produced a lot of noice, but very little airco.
