Bel Air Cemetery by MikeAtSea
The Bel Air Cemetery was the first burial ground to be opened on Mahe in the late 18th century. Among those buried here is Jean-Francois Hodoul, a successful corsair and the giant said to the the son of Charles Dorthee Savy. The elongated monument vividly attests to the height of the giant, some 9 feet 6 inches on this death at the age of 14. Another enigmatic figure buried here is Pierre-Louis Poiret who clamed to be the son of ill-fated Louis XVI.
