Daltons Banana Guest house: Banana Island-A must see in Sierra Leone!
In our visit to Sierra Leone our best experience was a visit to Banana Island. A lush green tropical island with 2 volcanic mountains rising sharply from the sea. The island is tiny and the village tinier, but thanks to our host Dalton we have made the most out of it. Dalton is a local fisherman that also runs what it well may be " the most inspiring beach resort in West Africa". Don't expect any luxuries though... As you can imagine, Dalton was THE person to take us fishing and exploring the untouched beaches of the island. In his restoraunt you had tones of fish lobsters and huge crabs for a fraction of the price we would pay in Freetown. The rooms were simple but clean and cost 10 US for the double making it an absolute bargain.
Unique Quality: The host himself is a warm character and the best possible seaman to guide you around the prestine waters. The location of the guest house is right on a secluded beach and the menue is FRESH fish

Cabenda Hotel: Where to stay in Freetown
Just spent 2 weeks in Freetown staying at Hotel Cabenda. Second floor rooms $75 per night. Top floor (with really nice views over most of Freetown) $100.
Fairly new facility. Would rate it a B+/A-.
Pros:
*Clean rooms
*Hot water
*Good food at the restaurant (prices were reasonable)
*Electricity reliable (with the help of an in-house generator)
*Staff helpful and courteous
*Pool (cleaned daily)
*Security was good
Cons:
*Door to balcony had significant cracks to allow lots of mosquitos in (dealt with that by turning down airconditioing to freeze the little buggers)
*Internet connection was down more often than up
*persistent plumbing problem in my room that was not fixed despite repeated complaints
All in all, not bad. I would recommend it to anyone who can't get in to Country Lodge or Mambo Point (Mami Yoko is still occupied by the UN).

There was no choice during a civil war. Tents or tents behind barbed and razor wire.
Unique Quality: Ah yes, the outstanding qualities........was that the constant smell of urine wafting through our tent, the weird bugs, ants, the snake, scorpion or lizard that called our camp home. When the sun went down the sounds of the bar/brothel accross the road outside the gates with the getto blaster blaring was just wonderful.
