Staying with the locals
Once the locals find out your an American, the locals will insist you stay with them. This is the most economical way of experiencing Mogadishu. You will not have to put any deposit down on the stay. You will have such a great time that they will insist on video taping the experience to send home. Your host will also allow your friends and family back home to donotate to their charitable cause.
It is a tradition tha the locals will offfer you traditional hand restraints and colorful blind folds. The sights might be hard to see since you will be blindfolded. Mail service to send videos home. You may probably will find it VERY HARD TO LEAVE

Safahi Hotel: Choose a safe hotel
In Mogadishu, I didn't really expect anything from a hotel, a safe and secure resting ground is all I wanted.
I was warned by one of the UN staff, that the Safahi Hotel at the K4 intersection was the choice of many journalist. However, be very careful that there are two Safahi hotels, and the 'fake' Safahi is known to have its customers kidnapped.
Be very careful when you choose your hotel.
The hotel was clean. It is 4 stories high and quite a few rooms, I was the only one staying at that time.
The rooms are clean and equip with an air conditioner (note that I wrote 'equip' because the AC works only when there is electricity, and the supply of electricity weren't reliable when I was there).
The hotel provides all three meal with enough pasta and juice for the whole Mogadishu, plus lamb chop and fruit.
