While operating in Jilib, we stayed in an abandoned rice farm built by the Chinese. We "air assaulted" in, and occupied by force. I was on the initial recon, as the medical officer, and scoped the place out for health hazards, as well as looked for a good place for our aid station. We ended up setting up shop in what may have been an admin building or something. It worked really well. Was clean (eventually), and dry (during the few times it rained). It was strange...here was an entire compound that was unoccupied. Each small unit of our battalion ended up with essentially a little bungalow. We really were blessed with great accomodations.
Abandoned theater that we used for "Somali Nights" variety shows. The Chaplain, Bill M. and I brought our guitars, and we would sing songs, and encourage people to show off any talents they had...juggling, jokes, poetry (yeah, right...in a light infantry battalion?), etc. One night, we played the "Jilib Bowl," the soccer stadium in town... The Oriental Hotel is a class act. It is THE Hotel in the centre of Hargeisa. There is a travel agent/airline office just at the entrance. After reception you enter a massive indoor courtyard complete with canopies. They dish out some delicious looking meals here and the staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. The founder of the hotel fought in World War II for the British Army and a picture of his medals hang over the fountain. Rooms are well appointed. Beds are comfy and the bathrooms have their own hot water heaters. I was impressed with the hotel in general. It is well priced (less than $20 a night), has good facilities and is perfectly located in town. It probably doesn't make any difference anymore, but there was a small Italian-run hotel across from a park in Mogadishu that had wonderful rooms, food, and service. Two of the so-called 'major tourist hotels' listed in the OHG were pretty 'rustic'--holes in the walls, sporadic electricity, little to eat. Theme: Hotel
