SCANDINAVIAN HOTEL: A GOOD MEAL

This is a good budget hotel near the airport. They also have good food. I ate here one night and the nice waiter took some pictures of the rooms for me. You can sit outside as well. They offer cool rooms, TV, ensuite bathrooms with tubs, great service and it's quiet. You can take the cheap bus into town from the front door.

Your on your own: Bring your own tent and get out of the Mogadishu!!

We lived in tents in the interior Desert far from the coastal cities.

THE AMBASSADOR HOTEL: THE BEST LUXURY HOTEL IN SOMALIA

This is THE luxury hotel in Somaliland. Do not get too excited – they will never have a swimming pool. So what do you get? A nice clean and efficient hotel set in wonderful gardens that are also a sprawling restaurant. The beds are modern and comfy with a mosquito net and overhead fan. Keep the dark curtains closed and the rooms are lovely and cool. Keep them open to dry clothes in the day. Bathrooms are modern & clean, but only have a basic shower. The whole hotel has wi-fi and an internet area if you are not carrying a laptop. In your room you get a satellite TV and very cold mini-bar fridge. You have to bring your own alcohol into the country. They have a rooftop you can walk on to see all of Hargeysa. For more active guests they have a gym and tennis courts.

Security? Fantastic. One of the guards escorted me to another hotel one night after dark when I went for a meal. He refused payment – just felt it was his job. I did buy him dinner though.

You can pay the bandit taxis $5 for the 3-4 miles into town, walk or take the shared taxis/bus for a few pennies. They come every 20 minutes or so.

The restaurant is spread out all over the grounds. You can dine completely outside, half inside or completely inside – all set in the amazing gardens. Their menu is massive, you can watch them cooking of you wish and the quality is very good.

They do have VIP rooms and private villas for upscale guests.

Enjoy!

Unique Quality:
* Fabulous gardens & outdoor dining
* Reservations can be booked from their website
* Wi-fi
* Excellent room fridges
* Satellite TV
* Quiet

THE ORIENTAL HOTEL: RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE

The Oriental Hotel is a class act. It is THE Hotel in the centre of Hargeisa. There is a travel agent/airline office just at the entrance. After reception you enter a massive indoor courtyard complete with canopies. They dish out some delicious looking meals here and the staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. The founder of the hotel fought in World War II for the British Army and a picture of his medals hang over the fountain.

Rooms are well appointed. Beds are comfy and the bathrooms have their own hot water heaters. I was impressed with the hotel in general. It is well priced (less than $20 a night), has good facilities and is perfectly located in town.

BARWAAQO HOTEL: THE TOWER OF HARGEISA

The Barwaaqo is a clean, well equipped and well run hotel right in the heart of Hargeisa. It is also the highest building that has a great looking restaurant on the top. The security guard is massive and friendly, but protects the hotel and its guests well. I was really impressed with this hotel.

They have 3 kinds or rooms:

• Single
• Double
• VIP

All rooms are well furnished and very modern. They include:

• Satellite TV
• Telephone
• Laundry and Housekeeping
• Modern bathrooms with western-style toilets and showers
• Modern furniture
• Fridge
• Heaters

Hotel services:

• Internet service
• Rooftop Restaurant – best views of the city
• 24 hour electricity
• 24 hour staffing and security
• Lift
• Airport shuttle
• International phone service

You get all this for rooms starting at $15 a night! Wow!

Just email them and they will pick you up at the airport and save you $5.
