self-catering cottages

by csistok

Has anyone been to any "self-catering" cottages in Franschhoek? The guidebook I have recommends Klein Dassenberg, Blueberry Hill, Owl Cottage, and several others. The prices quoted are only a bit more expensive than a private room at a hostel, and they sound really nice. Was wondering if they really are as nice as they are described, for such a low price? any recommendations?

You could stay in Franschhoek, but probably you try one of the villages in the neigbourhood, as FH is quite expensive.Try Stellenbosch.
Have a look at my South African pages

I would rather trust the guide book. Franschhoek is one of the villages around the town of Stellenbosch - not the other way around. Granted that Franschhoek is one of the most expensive villages, but it is also the most scenic/idyllic with many fine resturants.

"Beautiful Franschhoek"

Franschhoek must be one of the most beautiful places in South Africa. It is a small town in the Western Cape, about 1 hours drive from Cape Town International Airport.
The town is almost surrounded by mountains, which makes it extremely picturesque. It was founded in 1860, about two centuries after the French Huguenots settled in the area (c1680’s).
Some great wineries and restaurants can be found in this beautiful town. One of the finest restaurants is Le Quartier Francais, voted as one of the top 50 in the world.
Despite the small size of the town, it is worth much more than a day visit. There are many excellent accommodation options on offer and quite a lot to see and enjoy.
I visited Franschhoek on several occasions before and recently spent a weekend in this beautiful place.

"What to do"

Franschhoek is part the Western Cape winelands. There are many wineries to visit, many have restaurants at the estates.
If you want to know more of the history of the French Settlers in South Africa, do visit the Huguenot Monument and Museum.
The town can easily be explored by foot, as it is small and easy to negoatiate.
