I had real trouble finding accommodation in Bloemfontein, as our visit coincided with the 100th birthday celebrations of the African National Congress (ANC) - not that we were invited!
After some difficulty, I managed to find the Duinerus Guest House - and what a find it was! Located in a quiet suburb sandwiched between the University of the Free State and the N1 (Johannesburg - Cape Town) highway, it was a 'home from home' and an absolute gem for people travelling on a budget.
The accommodation is self catering, but the owner has been very generous in equipping the kitchens with tea, coffee, milk, bread, fruit juice, butter, jam and rusks: in other words the makings of a perfectly adequate breakfast at no additional cost. The rooms (all en suite) are compact but comfortable, and equipped with both fans and heaters to cope with Bloem's somewhat extreme climate. There is secure off street parking, and the surroundings are pleasant.
I should note that there is no air conditioning and no swimming pool, but for this price, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect this.
What makes this place so outstanding is the generosity and thoughtfulness of the host. She struck an excellent balance between being friendly and helpful, yet not intrusive (I can't bear hosts who crowd and fuss over you) and her accommodation is some of the best value for money I've experienced in a long time.
The guest house is well located for those wanting a break on the long haul to/from Cape Town and doesn't require a major detour from the highway. It is also excellently located for the university (from which I suspect it derives a large proportion of its business). Should you wish to self cater, it is also close to a well stocked Spar supermarket on Nelson Mandela Drive.
We stayed in a unit comprising three en suite bedrooms with a shared kitchen/living area, which was ideal for a family travelling together.
An absolute find, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!
one of the best place and very affordable place in bloemfontein is a back hostel near the naval hill games park. bed rates starts from 55 Rands in dormitory and important thing one can explore naval hill park anytime wish. there are alos number of guest houses, hotels and huts.. and for those are more adventurous there is a very nice hut type accommodation a.k.a Bush Pub situated very near to the city, there are almost 50 huts and lovely bar also lacated in between the property.
unique qualities of both of the places mentioned above both represents the true face of afrika, southern part of africa is ofcourse favorite destination among tourists for wildlife and both of the place are part of the games. at bush puc one can view hundreds of spring bok (south africa's national animal) and lot more
The Holiday Inn Garden Court in Bloemfontein, is possibly the best place to stay in Bloemfontein.
Used by our National Sports teams, when they play International matches in Bloemfontein.
Classic Cape Dutch architecture sets the tone of this hotel which is situated in Brandwag, a residential suburb of Bloemfontein, only a few kilometres from the city centre and within easy access of the national motorway. The hotel also has a skylink to the Mimosa Shopping Mall which offers restaurants, cinemas and banks.
Spacious and comfortable bedrooms overlook lush gardens. Here, both the swimming pool and courtyard are perfect for leisure and business travellers. The Garden Grill is famous for its traditional breakfast, as well as for warm, attentive service. The hotel has a popular family restaurant on the premises and Memories ladies bar is a convivial place to meet and enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
The hotel surrounds a lovely large swimming pool, where you can relax in the sun.
Wow what a lovely farm, real South-Africa!
It's not in the city Bloemfontein but just outside!!! In the middle of nowhere you find this little oasis!!! The surrounding and views looks like a desert (it's not far away from the big Karoo) but the guesthouse is one creation of beautiful nature!!!!!
The owners are farmers and they have horses, so I went horse riding in the desert and it was nice experience, bloody hot but absolute worth it!!!
I saw little wildlife running next to my horse, that was so cool!
The food is fantastic. They have one pool but when we visited Oude Kraal it was not very clean (African people and a swimmingpool is not a good combination)!
The bar in the guesthouse is very nice, especially after your meal and then sitting relaxed in the launch is a nice ending of the day!!!
As i have mentioned at my previous tip this is one of the best place for those who are going to bloemfontein for some adventure, they can find right at the place where they are living.
One of the normal range lodge in Bloemfontein on Nelson Mandela Drive, opposite Grey College. Its ideally located, walking distance from University of Free State as well as Brandwag centre and Mimosa Mall.
