JHB Airport layover
by radenputra
Is there shower at the airport? Or 24-hr cafes/internet kiosks? How much would it cost?
I expect to arrive the airport probably around 4am and probably have to kill some time there to wait until morning

Yes there are, and i think the price is minimal, if anything. There are 24 hour kiosks, but they are busy revamping the international arrivals side, so you might have to take a short walk to the domestic side of the airport. If you are in transit, there are a good variety of shops within the international transit section

I was also wondering about the showers...
Were you able to easily find showers in the Jo-burg airport? I have a lay-over there and would like to take a shower before returning to the States. Was the cost decent? Thank you!
Travel Tips for Johannesburg
check out the Voortrekker ...
by Kallista
check out the Voortrekker Monument, (at Pretoria) ... a huge granite block, designed to symbolise the indomitable spirit of the Voortrekkers ... the brave Boers, in the mid 19th century, pushed northward to the unknown (at that time)territory. The monument is surrounded by a wall depicting ox-wagons, representing the trek wagons which the Boers drew up in a circle to form as a defense.
FOOTBALL but Soccer to North America
by kenHuocj
Turning back the clock, obviously before Television and the Internet,
the weekly comics were my access to UK Football. Teams that come to mind, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackpool, Preston North End, Blackburn Rover, Hearts, Dundee United, Totterham Hotspurs.
Later came the Manchester United and M. City, The we heard about the Stanley Matthews, Pele, Eusebio and many more.
For many who are not so familiar with the game, instead of getting a copy of the Cilliers or Brittanica Encyclopaedias, click on Wikipedia and for more Skills insights or into the various UK Leagues and Championships essentially a pair of Boots and a regulation round Ball
Seeking African curios
by Jenniflower about Curio and craft shops
People from all over the world come to South Africa in search of African artifacts, curios and mementos.
Once upon a time fur and fur goods was popular and there was a good trade going on. But it is now taboo in most parts of South Africa. Frowned upon. The most common types are African masks, textiles, ostrich eggs, metal and wire crafts (eg windmills and car replicas made from recycled tin cans), wooden animals and paintings it seems. Be prepared to barter when buying crafts from informal stalls or on the side of the road. They will try their luck and quote a high price at first. Haggle and get them down to at least 60% of the initial price. Usually works for me :)
Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton CBD
by CatherineReichardt
According to current planning (March 2010), the first leg of the Gautrain rapid transit rail system should be operational by May 2010 (no clear indication of when in May, so assume that it will be by the end of the month). This will link OR Tambo International Airport to the Sandton CBD, and the journey will take about 15 minutes: this is a great improvement as currently the journey takes 45 minutes - 1.5 hours by road, depending on traffic and roadworks (see comments on roadworks elsewhere). The fare is also pitched to be considerably cheaper than a cab. The unresolved issue is how the operator will ensure security for passengers, so we'll just have to wait and see how they resolve this challenge.
Ultimately this rail link will extend up to Pretoria (via Midrand and Centurion), although this is not due to be commissioned until 2011 at the earliest.
Delectable Baglios ice cream!
by Jenniflower about Baglios
Baglios is a chain of Italian ice cream shops around the country, generally found in shopping malls.
They are a lovely treat to have but are quite expensive! It has a wide variety of ice cream in delicious flavours!
I usually enjoy a sweet and a non-sweet, so generally opt for coffee and chocolate scoops in a cup/home made sugar cone.
If I am in a fruity mood I opt for one of the citrus fruity flavours.
