reliable taxi service for 5

by johnjohn03

We are travelling to South Africa in mid-August and arrive at OR Tambo Int at about 10 at night. Rather than collect our hire car and drive in the dark, I would prefer to get a taxi to take us to where we are staying near Hartebeespoort Dam.

Can anyone recommend a reliable taxi that will meet us at the airport and drive us there (two adults and three children). What would be a reasonalbe charge?

I suggests you ask your hosts to suggest or arrange a transfer. Most guesthouses or hotels usually have a service provider they use. Good idea though to leave the self driving until the next day when its is light. If you do not know your way around the highways with the numerous roadworks at the moment can be a nightmare. I'm guessing here but it will probably cost you somewhere between ZAR 250 and ZAR 500 for the transfer, the distance from airport to Hartebeespoort is around 100 km.

Johannesburg Tip

One thing that I have to say that I was soooo amazed at is the amount of people they can fit in one van!! Everywhere you go, you see about 20 people getting out of a taxi and when you are on the highway, you will see vans like this!!

Support your children: 94.7 Children's Cycle

by Eish

In November of each year, the day before the 94.7 Cycle Challenge (another tip - 27000 cyclists in 2007 and 94.7 km) there is the Children's Cycle Challenge. There are races for each age group starting from as young as 2 or 3 (the children go round a track on scooters, or bicycles with training wheels) to 15 (where they can do a distance of 16km). In the younger groups, the parents get issued with entry numbers the same as their children and chaperone their kids around the track.

In 2007, it was held at the Waterfall Equestrian Estate on flat dirt roads, and 4000 children entered. Phil Liggett was one of the commentators - he was at the start line. For those people who watch the Tour de France, Phil Liggett's voice is synonomous with the English commentary that gets beamed around the world. I love the fact that Pick n' Pay and Highveld Radio (the race sponsors) take children seriously!

Entries are done electronically on the web site before the time, but if there is space, they accept late entries at the Expo the day before the event. The venue of the Expo changes frequently but is advertised on the web site. Bicycle. No helmet no ride. Plenty of sunscreen. Water beforehand (although water and other drinks are supplied during and after the race). Attitude.

My favourite mall

by crazyguitar about Rosebank Mall

There are good shops, restaurants and cafes.
African Craft Market. is my favourite place there. You can buy Sotuhafrican music, there are lots of good bands, from african-jazz to zulu singers.
In the African Craft Market it is easy to find hand craft from all over Africa. Cote d´Ivoire, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique...

By plane, of course! The airport at Jo'burg is huge but... chaotic!!! Oh, and you MUST check out the quaint airport at SUN CITY too! Would you believe it when I say that it resembles an African Hut (complete with a straw-like roof!). It's truly unique. I'd try and get a pic of it scanned and post it up soon. Wait for it O.K.?

Best steak ever!

by antz about I can't remember - maybe someone can remind me?

This place (whatever it is called) is great because you can order a 'hot rock' - basically you get a rare steak on a 'hot rock' and you kinda cook it while eating it at the same time - best fun I've ever had! Hmmm...funnily enough, the steak is really good!
