12 hours stop-over in Joburg
by schmechi
We'll arrive in the morning at 10:00 am and will leave Jo'burg international airport in the evening at 9:45 p.m. Which sights in or around Jo'burg should absolutely not being missed during a South Africa-trip?

It just depends on your interests.

I am open to anything but I tend to avoid (art) museums...

I also avoid arty places. You could take a visit to our Lion Park. It is situated in the Northern Suburbs and / or
make a trip down to Monte Casino (dont be put off by the word Casino)there is a casino, but you can visit the Bird Park, see a show, (bird show), very entertaining, take a lift up in the Balloon, gives you a great view, many restaurants to choose from.
I am sure the taxi drivers (car)- NOT MINI BUS driver will know where the Lion Park is, as well as Monte Casino, both are in the Northern suburbs.

Btw: As I read that Jo'burg itself does not offer too may sights I'd be also intrested in "cradle of mankind" and especially "Lesedi cultural village" (I know it is touristic but unfortunately I miss something like that during my stay). Would it possible to make it in the proposed time frame?

I definitely agree with June - Montecasino and the Bird Park are well worth a visit. See my tip at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/7e55c/21eac9/4/

You should be able to do it in a day.
Here is the web address
http://www.lesedi.com/contact.htm
You can also contact them via email and they will give you all the info you need about Cradle of Humankind

In my opinion, a good place to spend your time without taking the risk of being hijacked in downtown Johannesburg is Gold Reef City. OK, it is touristy and artificial, but there you can visit a defunct Gold Mine, see historical buildings from the Gold Boom and of course have a lot of fun with all the caroussels (if that is the right word). There is also a Casino nearby. It is easily accessible from the Highway. You definitely won't get bored and you will learn something of Johannesburg's History without having to walk through museums. There are also mine dances. Of course, it is not the same as a traditional dance in the rural area, but than again, this is Johannesburg, not Zululand.
Travel Tips for Johannesburg
Explore the multi-cultural...
by arzauk
Explore the multi-cultural diversity by walking through Yeoville, having dinner in one of Melville or Greenside's excellent restaurants, drive up along the mansions of Northcliff hill to the water tower, sit and enjoy the best view of the entire city. Driving at night from the south on the M1 North. As you approach the city center, the motorway gives you a postcard view of the city - that makes you forget of the grime and crime that populates its streets!)
The summer storms, with a Wagnerian sky and a coreography of thunder and lightening to soften the toughest!
The clear sky, the blazing sun and the crisp fresh air of winter, driving along the leafy fortified suburbs of the north.
Winter in June and July
by Moirads
While airport luggage security has been massively beefed up generally (and not just for the FIFA World Cup) whenever I travel I put all my valuables of any description in my handluggage. I leave my suitcase (cheap) unlocked and do not travel (in fact don't own) with expensive brand names and designer labels. That way my belongings have always arrived on the otherside the way they left. June and July are winter months in the Southern Hemisphere. You WILL need warm clothes. But layer your clothing because it is usually lovely and warm during the day, particularly outdoors. Pack a sun hat, sun glasses and sun screen even for winter. You will be able to get any toiletries and most medical supplies here. Pack all valuables IN YOUR HANDLUGGAGE. Have you packed a torch? They always seem to be useful.

Drive to Kruger National Park.
In any case you SHOULD get there (even by plane), but if it's possible to drive, you will NOT be sorry. The land is absolutely numbingly beautiful...you really do get the feeling of being in the Cradle of Humankind...the land just FEELS old...
Watch out for cattle and children when you're rounding the bends!

We hired 'chartered' a taxi we found in front of Hilton Hotel as we thought that it was much safer...rather to get one from the road at random.
He was indeed a nice guy, he drove us during 3 days to a 'Safari' spot on our way to Sun City!
Trustworthy Wimpy!
by Jenniflower about Wimpy
The Wimpy is synonomous with growing up as kids in South Africa.. the drive-thru, the roadhouse, the rest stop on the way to our holiday destination!
Family-orientated and reliable.
I have vivid memories of driving down to Durban from Johannesburg as a child, excitedly waiting to catch that first smell and then glimpse of the ocean! This conjures up nostalgic memories, which includes at elast 3 pit stops on the way there!
At the service stations they generally have the garage, a shop selling sundries and sweets, toilet facilities and some restaurants. The Wimpy is usually one of these.
The Wimpy is a bright and cheerful restaurant, which caters for the family and kids espacially. A much-needed service whilst travelling with kids! The food is nothing spectacular in presentation to be honest, but it is tasty and simple and well priced.
We particularly enjoy thier breakfasts!
Rashers of bacon, mushrooms, eggs, tomato and baked beans (okay, I could've done without the beans..)
Their burgers are filling, their salads crisp and fresh...
If you are wanting something quick, cheap and simple to eat, this is the place to go!
ps: Their milkshakes are great too!
