7 hour layover - can I leave the airport? What should I do?

by roanna

I'm arriving from Entebbe Uganda on a Thursday at 10:40am, flying out to Washington Dulles at 6pm. I noticed the other posts about layovers but with responses varying re: length of layover and arrival/departure times, I thought I would re-post. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, a great thing to do is go to the Lion Park. By the time you get there, spend a couple of hours, play the lions cubs (which are so cute) grab something to eat it should fill up your time. There are organised day trips you can do, but it will probably be cheaper to catch a taxi there and back. We just walked around, but the taxi driver can also drive you through the safari park. Also some taxis are not licenced to go to certain areas so make sure they know you want to go to the lion park when you book.

Hi. 7 hours is enough time to 'do' something outside of the airport. In addition to the Lion Park, which is a good option, I'd recommend the Apartheid Museum which most people absolutely love and you could easily spend 4 + hours there. It's done really well. I'd allow 45 mins from airport to most other places in/around Joburg.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Gold Reef city, Plantarium,...

by Bella_JNB

Gold Reef city, Plantarium, Johannesburg Botanical gardens, Randburg Waterfront Randburg, Kruger House Museum, Heia Safari Ranch and the Magaliesberg. The weather, sunny and the friendly people. The wildlife and nature, nightlife and all the shopping malls.

Enjoy yourself!

by worm_star

Anything bearable! For the summer/spring season, pack light. It's pretty cool in the morning but the weather heats up as soon as the sun is up. I can only suggest for summer/spring season. A pair of pants shouldn't be too warm. Do pack up a good pair of sneakers if you are planning to walk around more comfortably. Shopping complexes in Jo'burg have common shops that sells anything you need. So, you don't have to worry. If you would like to buy souvenirs, i suggest you go to the markets. They have a whole variety of ostrich eggs, wood carvings, etc. ...Bargain.

Job Seekers & Local Newspaper Link

Well if you looking to move to South Affrica , well I guess the right place to start looking for a job is through the local newspaper. Well you can have a look at the link provided , it has jobs that`s listed in any region of South Africa that is placed in the Job seekers section in all the classifieds of all the various local newspaper.

If you maybe just want to know whats happening in the news in South Africa then this is the place to be.

Car Hire

by sue_stone

Everyone drives in Johannesburg. There is basically no public transport. We collected a hire car upon arrival at the airport, and dropped it off before we departed.

Most of the large car hire companies have a depot at the airport, and the collections desks are all located in the ORTIA Multi Storey car park, opposite the Domestic Terminal Building. Here you will find desks for Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, and National, along with several smaller companies. To the rear of all the pickup offices is the car park, and there is an efficient system for collecting and dropping off your car.

We hired a car through Africarhire, who are agents for Hertz. I chose them as they offered more comprehensive insurance cover than most of the other companies.

Trendy spot!

by queensgirl about Moyo

The ambience is great with African decor the waitstaff is dressed in trendy African attire. The decor was African with a modern flavor which was nice. The outdoor patio had coaches and tables with fireplace very impressive.

The food was very good also.
Along with the service
They also have live music The Oxtails
The Mpumalanga Salad
