    For those with a bit of cash to blow the Melrose Hotel is well worth a stay. The Decor is extremely funky (modern african) and the rooms are beautifully finished. The Hotel is centrally located in the North of JHB with all major highways, shopping districts etc. conveniently close. The Hotel is also situated in a new development (Melrose Arch) with a gallery, restaurants, banks and gym

    Good staff and housekeeping are excellent. It all goes haywire when you want to make a phonecall. They can't seem to figure out the switchboard.

    I checked in at 1am and left the next morning. I saw the swimming pool at breakfast. I didn't even know it was there, or I would have used it!

    Rooms are slightly above basic and they should charge less for a place with this many rooms. There was no list of facilities. Again, if there had been, I would have used the pool. Also no minibar. Bathroom basic as well.

    Holiday Inn seem to think they are good money for value, I would disagree. Nice hotel, but just nice

    This is VERY near the airport and you get more than other hotels charging almost the same. This means that many hotels nearby are a rip-off. For a few extra dollars, you do get peace and quiet.

    Breakfast was fantastic, but I wouldn't pay for it. I got it free because of a problem with the room. They do eggs, bacon and omlettes anyway you want them though.

  • As I always stayed with friends I'm not much help. Except some advise for firsttimers. Try to find accommodation outside center.

  • In July 2002, I paid about US$110 per night.

    The best thing about this hotel is its location, attached to the biggest, nicest shopping mall in Sandton. The hotel itself is gaudily spectacular, but the service leaves something to be desired. (To be fair, the Michelangelo did show some improvement during my last visit in July 2002.) The Hyatt is cheaper and friendlier, and it has a great restaurant.

  • In December 2001, I paid about US$85 per night.

    This hotel looks a little hideous from the outside, but the interior is quite attractive and the rooms are very pleasant. The service is far better than at some other establishments in South Africa, and the price can't be beat for a 5-star hotel.

    All very expensive (but probably quite reasonable if paying in foreign currency like pounds or dollars), but all excellent and of high international standard. No dodgyness here!

  • Sandton Sun Intercontinental - I spent my wedding night there. It is quite pricey, but the rooms, service and proximity to excellent restaurants makes it worht it.

    And this is the lovely antique-filled hotel room which we occupied here at the Elephant Tower. The Conde Nast Traveler magazine mentioned in their Dec 99/ Jan 2000 issue that this hotel has again clinched the #1 spot for the African continent. That's amazing, isn't it?
