Accommodations in a safe area. Please advise

by emma434

We will be visiting Johannesburg for 3 days in July. Could someone recommend a (3+ to 4 star) hotel in a safe area? We want to visit a mall or two. We were thinking near the airport. Also,we were considering guest houses. Good idea?
Thank you for your help. emma434

Back in 2003 we stayed at Annabel's of Sandton. They are on the net. Its not near the airport but they will pick you up and look after you. We wanted somewhere to recover from a 12 flight from Australia and to get our bearings as we knew that security was an issue. They have a pool and a beautiful home and yard. You will be safe and secure there. Its a good starting point and they will arrange to get you to and from airports. Try googling Annabel's at Sandton and checking their site as a start point.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

When Visiting JNB

by cokes

In my personal opinion I would say it would be best to stay in Sandton when visiting JNB. This use to be my favourite place to live when visiting JNB. Well I guess I stay here now.

My reason for saying so is that it is generally safer than most places in JNB although there is crime everywhere. There is great Hotels and Shopping Malls here. The Hotels cater for all tourist activity here. The busy life , people is not very relaxed here. They always in rush to do something and go somewhere.

Suppression of culture

by Jenniflower

South Africa'a artworld suffered greatly under Apartheid.

Artwork and song lyrics were flooded with anti-apartheid themes, and were forced underground.

To listen to one of these songs, or to own one of these paintings was evidence enough that you were a traitor and you could be thrown into prison!

The bulldozing of both District Six, a vibrant multicultural area in Cape Town, and Johannesburg’s Sophiatown, where internationally famous musicians learned their craft in an area once described as ’a skeleton with a permanent grin’ are two important examples of this... where communities were literally 'wiped out'.

Groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Soweto String Quartet, Tree63, Johnny Clegg and Mango Groove have managed to bring South African sound to a worldwide (and appreciative!) audiance.

Cradle of humankind

by Gard

About 40-50 km outside Joburg you’ll find the Sterkfontein Caves which is a part of the Cradle of humankind. We drove out there one day to get a tour of this place where they have found fossils of our human ancestors so to speak. The first cranium was found in 1936 and right now they are working on “digging out” a skeleton that is believed to be about 4 million years old and 99.9 % complete. But it is a slow process because they have been excavating this one fossil since about 1994. So maybe we’ll get to see this Australopithecus Africanus (our guide seemed to enjoy saying these words) in a museum in a few years time. We paid about 20 Rand per person for the tour of the cave and it seemed like the guide was pretty knowledgeable when he took us through the cave. There are a few steps down (and eventually up :-) and in some places you have to crawl a little bit. There is a tiny museum at the entrance area that will tell you a little bit about the history of the cave, the fossils that has been found there etc. Due to the fossils found here the site has become a World Heritage Site.

Stylish Night Out

by cokes about Monsoon Lagoon

Once again the scenario is set like Monte Casino. Monsoon Lagoon is situated in Cesars Palace right next ot JNB International Airport.

The days of DJ entertainment are long gone and Monsoon lives by the philosophy that audio and visual entertainment should be the norm.

During the night you’ll experience falling snow, bubbles experience a hurricane and water mist all while partying away to your favorite tunes. Lights and sound are second to none, from powerful argon laser to the intelligent lighting; you’ll be dazzled by choreographed light and sound shows.

Monsoon plays host not only to top National and International DJ’s but acts and bands as well. Dress fashionably smart. Guys - No vests, torn or faded jeans, no sports shoes.
