weather/clothing

by cathimckillop

I am visiting Johannesburg and Pretoria and the Kruger National Park from 25th July - 1oth August this year. What will the weather be like then and what sort of clothing will be appropriate? I have a two and half year old and wonder if there are any tips they may help me?
Thanks in advance.
Cathi.

Kruger National Park enjoys a subtropical climate and is coolest during the winter months of June, July and August. This is also when it is the driest. The days are warm then and the evenings vary from very cool to freezing (0° C, 32° F). You need a range of clothing including warmer clothes for the evenings. I recommend combat-style trousers with zip off legs for all round use. Throw in a few light jackets and long sleeve shirts for diner.

The great thing about visiting in the winter is that it’s a great time to see animals. There is a lot less vegetation to get in your way and animals go to the waterholes to drink in the mornings and afternoons because of the lack of rainfall. This makes it easy for you to see a lot of them in one place.

Thanks but an I ask you to be more specific - what sort of temperature will it be roughly and will this vary between Johannesburg/Pretoria/Kruger NP?
Thanks,
Cathi.

Jo'burg and Pretoria kind of run into each other, at least it seems like it when you are driving. Kruger is way to the east and north. The exact weather would vary, but not the overall cool/col/dry season.

Also, there are plenty of clothing stores, even inside Kruger Park! I bought a nice baseball cap and a shirt when I was in the park.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Johannesburg Tip

by sierrak

Johannesburg is an incredible city of lights and contrasts. Soweto ia an amazing reality check of the real South Africa behind the glam exterior. I recommend going on a tour and talking to the people. Expect to chuck up a few bucks to help out the people. Remember that being a hard ass tourist is more difficult than to give a few dollars to the people here who really need it. I'm not saying to be a hero, just a human being.

Jet skiing

by Jenniflower

There are a few places you can jet ski in the surrounds of Johannesburg, there beign three that immediately spring to mind.

The first is at Sun City.

Here it is R90 for 4 laps round a certain part of the lake. It's quite long which is nice, but is in a circular route, with no straight runs, so you cannot reach a huge speed.

The second is Hartebessport Dam, a lovely area is laid aside for you to jet ski. You can bring your own and ski on the dam.

The third is the Vaal River. Here too, bring your own and you can go for long stretches along the Vaal River :)

Cedar Square Shopping Center

by junecorlett about Various

Firstly, this is not a particular shop. This is a shopping center.
Cedar Square Shopping center is located in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. We frequently visit for the many restaurants.
Most of the restaurants give you a panoramic view of the Jhb suburbs.
It has an indoor / outdoor feel.
I will list the shops in my tips for shopping. Mostly gifts and clothing.
It also has an electonics shop as well as a mega hardware store (for the men)

Petrol and diesel prices are fixed in South Africa

by CatherineReichardt

It may seem odd to visitors, but there is no competition allowed between oil companies in terms of their pricing in South Africa, so there is no value trying to shop around to get a good deal. The petrol (that's 'gas' for you North Americans) and diesel prices are set by the Department of Energy and no company is allowed to charge below that fixed level. Note that the fuel is slightly more expensive in the inland region as compared to the coast (to reflect the transport component from the coastal refineries), but the rate per litre (yes, we're metric) is still low compared to Europe.
