Transport from OR Tambo to Park Train Station

by petrok

Hi There

I am flying from Amsterdam on the 12th of October to Johannesburg and will arrive there on the 13th. What is the cheapest way to get from the airport to the train station. I am going to take the Intercape Bus to Bloemfontein from Park Station. Is the Metrotrain running from the airport to the train station or is the Gautrain running to the train station?

Regards
Petro

Hi Petro

This question gets asked fairly often and I have made lots of phone calls to the airport and to the bus companies. Everybody sort of believes that there must be a form of shuttle service, but when you start digging you find that there isn't anything. They are all waiting for the Gautrain to do the job, but until then, the only answer is to get a metered taxi.

South African National Museum of Military History

by Gard

When Nikki’s dad came up with the suggestion to go to the National museum of Military history I said “sure” because I do have an interest in history and like most boys I’m impressed by all sorts of gadgets :-) . I had never read or heard about this museum so I didn’t really have any expectations at all before we got there. The museum is located is located right next to the Johannesburg Zoo and we paid 10 Rand to get in. I realized pretty quickly that there were a lot to see and read in this museum. First of all there is a lot of information about the military history (obviously *grin*) and the aspects of the Anglo Boer war (between 1899 and 1902) are covered with pictures, strategic plans, posters etc.

Apart from information we also found a lot of military hardware. I was surprised to find lots of planes including old planes like German Messerschmitt, British Spitfire and even one of the first jet planes that the Germans developed during World War 2. Outside there were more modern jet planes on display. There were also an impressive collection of tanks, canons, small arms, decorations, uniforms etc. I enjoyed the visit to the museum and for that price it was a bargain. It is a bit sad to admit it but it is quite interesting to see how much effort man has put into building stuff to be able to kill each other. If you are into history and military hardware I would recommend a visit to this museum. Check out the their homepage at http://www.militarymuseum.co.za/

Newspapers

by Moirads

While more and more people are using online sources for the news, most residents of Johannesburg do still read newspapers.

Someone once accused me of reading “elitist newspapers” so I have tried to list all those English papers that I can remember, although I have never purchased most of them. I will mark the ones I sometimes read with an asterisk* and the ones I sometimes purchase with a double asterisk**. The comments in the brackets relate to frequency of publication.

Business Day* (Daily), The Star** (Daily), Citizen* (Daily), Sowetan (Daily), City Press (Daily), Mail and Guardian** (Weekly), Saturday Star* (Weekly), Sunday Independent** (Weekly), Sunday Times** (Weekly).

The Mail & Guardian is the one I never miss. It is published on a Friday and has an indepth look at politics and arts and culture.

Bakubung

by dejavu2gb

I was fortunate enough to spend a glorious weekend in this very lovely lodge, just minutes from Sun City, which is about 2 hours drive from Johannesburg.
Its a very short drive from the Pilansberg National Park which plays host to a variety of amazing animals including the infamous Big Five.
Our guide, Peter, was very enthusiastic and drove us all over the park showing us all the beautiful animals, until it was very dark, and then we had to head back, another great experience.

Bakubung is a nice place to escape to for a weekend, its got 76 airconditioned, thatched roof rooms that provide fantastic accommodation to all visitors. Our weekend included Breakfast and Dinner. The food was excellent, and there was a great variety!! (Makes me hungry just thinking about it)

If you want to visit Sun City there is a Shuttle bus that will take you there at a nominal charge. Or if you require transfers to and from the Airport, they will be happy to provide you.
I would recommend Bakubung as we had a very delightful 2 days stay at the lodge.

WhoZoo in Fourways (bar & club) - yuppie hangout, worth a try, The Venue in Rivonia (same), Nexxus in Randburg (predominantly rave music), Funky Town in Midrand (young crowd, but great commercial type music), Therapy/Akwa/Fly in 'The Heartland' aka Juta Street in Braamfontein (all gay clubs on a Saturday evening, but can be straight friendly depending on the mood of the door'man'). Therapy operates as GASS on a Friday night, which is a straight/gay-friendly club (hard core house music). Check regular fliers for up-&-coming parties that happen in and around the city. Check out http://www.sacitylife.com/ (brill site for accurate club/bar descriptions) or www.jol.co.za for a more comprehensive listing. smart-casual .... some clubs don't allow anybody in with trainers on, so take a spare pair of shoes if you are unsure.

Undoubtedly the best steak in JHB

by CheriseM about The Grillhouse

Upmarket steak house in Rosebank, JHB. The cheesecake is also a must. Great wine selection. Usually packed to capacity, so wise to book in advance. Details can be found on one of the many local eatery websites such as www.eatout.co.za Spiced fillet.
Yum :-)
