What's best method of transportation?

by sandcollector

If I'm staying in the Rosedale area, what's the best way for me to get to the Cradle area to visit the museum and caves - and to go to Soweta? Thanks.

I understand the transportation in Johannesburg is the pits. You can either self drive or, if the budget allows, hire a driver. South Africans will maybe have some suggestions.

I can't find a Rosedale within a couple of hundred miles of Johannesburg?

For the Cradle area, a hired car is about the only option. However, for Soweto it is safest to take a guided tour.

Excuse me. I thought the poster said at one point they were staying in Johannesburg. My mistake.....unless she meant Rosebank.

Re: What's best method of transportation?

She did say in other posts that they will be in Johannesburg.

I am concerned about their lack of understanding of Johannesburg, with the mis-spelled names etc. They have a high chance of getting lost, and there are areas in Johannesburg where you don't want to appear to be lost - Soweto is one of them.

I would definitely recommend guided tours. Johannesburg is no place in which to get lost.

Hire a car for Cradle of Humankind (unless you can afford a guide for the day - your hotel should be able to help you) and get a guided tour of Soweto.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Enjoy the weather - some great...

by Dougi

Enjoy the weather - some great outdoor pubs and restuarants.
Go down a mine.
Visit nearby Sun City and Pilansberg Game Reserve.
Meet the locals.
Enjoy yourself as beer and food is cheap. The people are great and the weather tops. People here like to party and are very hospitable! Beware they are sports mad.

Breathe in their culture...

by Nationsbound

Pack lightly! You don't want to be so busy worrying about your luggage that you forget to enjoy your surroundings! A back pack is a must! This form of travel is deffiantly better then worrying about lossing your purse or carry-on. As far as clothing and footwear are concerned, think multi-weather. Meaning one day it will be 40 degrees and the next 90 degrees. Bring a variety of warm and cool weather outfits. Toliet Paper! It will be best if you keep it in a back pack with you at all times. Most facilites, markets, etc will not have any. As with all international exploits, bring lots of film!!! You never can be sure when a quite African Sunset is going to go from usual to beautiful! If you are craving something more outdoorsy, be sure to wear comfortable, breathable shoes! Bring a journal! It doesn't need to be anything fancy, maybe just a plain notebook. But that way you will not only be having the time of your life, but actually writing it down for others to read (a task which is deffiantly harder to do once you return home).
Indulge yourself in their culture! Eat there foods, wear their clothing, speak their language!

OR Tambo - Sandton rail link opens 8 June 2010!

by CatherineReichardt

Good news - Gautrain have confirmed that the rapid rail link between Sandton and OR Tambo international airport will open on 8 June 2010 - just in time for the World Cup!
The pricing is not yet confirmed, but it will certainly be a quicker and cheaper way of getting between the airport and the Sandton CBD (where most of the international standard hotels in Johannesburg are located), as well as avoiding the roadworks.
Can't quite decide whether opening a brand new rail link less than a week before the biggest sporting event that this country has ever known is either extremely brave or certifiably mad - probably a bit of both! If nothing else, it goes to prove that we Jo'burgers are nothing if not brave ...

Go for the Buzz

by Stuwalmsley2003 about Buzz 9

I had a Buzz Pot, which was sliced steak fillet in a creamy cheese and tomato sauce on rice and served in a pot with cheese bread. It was delicious. Katie had a mexican platter and has been hooked on burritos ever since! Also we saw an actress that was one of the stars of Backstage, a South African soap. Buzz Pot
