Can someone help me?

by hannah93

does anyone know when Gold Reef City opened?
please reply asap!

Re: Can someone help me?

I don't know when, and I don't know if this is useful, but it was certainly opened before 1988/9 as I went there when I still lived in Vanderbijlpark but went with friends rather than family - probably when I was living in a flat and not at my parents house.

Hope this might at least help narrow down any internet searches.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Good ole Joey's

by Jenniflower

Johannesburg, has been given a bad rap over the years.

It used to be a thriving city (In the centre of the city), but many businesses, including The Stock Exchange, moved into Sandton, which is now a strong CBD (Central Business District) in its own right. Many businesses have de-centralised.

Having said that, it is undergoing a transformation, residential flats/apartments are being refurbished and money is being put into this city for the people.

Johannesburg city centre is not the ideal place for a traveller/tourist to go to. The city is generally dirty, has hawkers everywhere, and there’s not much in the way of family entertainment at all.

But if you would like to experience some traditional street culture, this is where you will find it. Keep your car windows closed though when driving through it, especially at night.

There is so much to see and enjoy and savour in the areas neighbouring the City Centre!

Bird watching

by Jenniflower

Hides are a wonderful way of viewing birds.

They are hardly aware you are there as you are under cover, and it is sheltered, with seating.

The floors do creak alot though, so be careful to walk as quietly as possible, so as not to frighten the birds away!

There is a vast bird presence in the surrounding areas of Johannesburg (game and national parks), and also many species in the suburbs of Johannesburg.

I used to live in the northern part of Johannesburg, and the gardens are generally large and lush and green, and birdlife thrives!

From hardidas (spelling??), to crows to sparrows... there are all kinds of birds around. Whatever you do, do not forget your binoculars, and its always a good idea to have a South African bird book on hand.

Relaxing Day Out

by cokes about Bright Water Commons

Well there is various shops here including a flea market and like I said that the atmosphere is so relaxing here its a nice place to take your time and shop. There is Variety Well most of the shops have a set price for their goods but at the flea market you may go ahead and negoited the price.

Kulula.Com

by cokes

Well if you look for a budget airline then this is one of 2 airlines to choose from when flying domestic flights in South Africa.

The only thing about Kulula.Com is that they don`t server any food on the plane.... who needs to eat when the flights is between 1 and 2 hours maximum.

Vibey, gorgeous decor, impossibly busy!

by CheriseM about Moyo in Melrose Arch

Wow - pretty much the only way to describe Moyo at the Arch. 5 stories of gorgeous decor, stunning food (Morrocan, so lots of tagines, but plenty to choose from), good service, pretty comprehensive wine list. Has a great bar with live music on Friday/Saturday nights (not sure if during the week also?). The downside - its almost impossible to get a table without a reservation, and its often fully booked for up to 3 weeks at a time. If so, try the Moyo in the Newtown Cultural Precinct - just as good, but maybe not as vibey. Lamb tagine
