accomodation

by smann

Hi.

I am planning moving to Joburg for a year on business. Would request assistance/tips on areas to stay for a safe, decent and convenient[ restaurants/malls]. What is the rentals I should be looking at for 1 bedroom apartments??

Thanks.

A lot would depend on where you going to be working, and if you will be travelling to outside areas etc. If you can provide a bit more info, I will gladly try and assist

Regards

Mike

Re: accomodation

Thanks Michael for your assistance. My business primarily is exports from Industrial area. However, there would be local guys assisting me on that. My involvement would be basically co-ord with bank and check out with shipping lines, which I assume could be done on phone as well.

So in fact a safe and convenient as for shopping/restaurants accommodation would be my take.

Would really appreciate your suggestions.

Cheers!!

To give you some idea of the difficulty in giving you advice . . . . . .

The greater Johannesburg city area is about 60km in diameter. The most desirable area for restaurants/shopping is on the northern fringes. The major industrial area is at the south east fringes. Getting from one end to the other in the rush hour tends toward a 2 hour commute.

Thanks Gerald.

I guess, it would be the northern parts of the city that i'd be looking at. I wont really be traveling on a daily basis to the industrial area.

Would appreciate your suggestions..

For your search, you can look around the "Sandton" area.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Hector Pieterson museum

by Gard

We went to Soweto and one of the places where we stopped was the corner where Hector Pieterson was shot dead by the police on June 16th 1976. He took part in a demonstration against the introduction of Afrikaans as a language in the black schools. Hector was only 12 years old. We also stopped by Hector Pieterson museum and it only cost 10 Rand to enter. In the museum you will find information about the events leading to June 16th and the uprising that followed. The museum was not that big and I found the Apartheid Museum more interesting. When we drove into Soweto the weather was great but at the museum we were surprised by an earsplitting hail storm. Fortunately, it wasn’t the big windscreen cracking type.

Biking

by Jenniflower

There are plenty of sports activities for adults and children. This area has a variety of quad bikes and scooters for kids to play on.

It is well supervised and safe.

There is also a lovely go-karting place in Strijdom Park, in Randburg.

At Brightwater Common (used to be Randburg Waterfront), they have a BMX track too, which has proven quite popular with teenagers. Great fun!

When I was a kid we used to go to a local dirt BMX track, for hours on end :)

As things are more safety conscious now, this kind of BMX track is necessary.

Dont miss the shpping!

Getting to Johannesburg

South Africa has a national carrier, "South African Airways" They fly too and from quite a few destinations. SAA was rated the topa airline in Africa. They also have some of the best engineers in the world and a few airlines send there planes here to be repaired.

Check out Carnivores for true...

by cherise

Check out Carnivores for true African fare (including game meat). For good Thai food, try Wangthai in Sandton City. Good sushi can be found at Benkei in Norwood - in fact, Norwood (Grant Avenue) caters for all tastes ... go look and enjoy. Excellent steak can be found at The Grillhouse in Rosebank, or the Butcher Shop & Grill in Sandton Square. Browns in Rivonia is great for continental variety, as well as a great wine list. Fresh, great tasting fish can always be found at The Fishmonger, particular the Illovo branch on Oxford Road.
