World Cup street celebration in Sandton 9 June
If you're arriving early for the World Cup and will be in Sandton at lunch time on 9 June, consider participating in the 'United We Shall Stand' initiative that is being sponsored by the Sun International Hotel group and local radio stations to demonstrate support for the South African team, Bafana Bafana (which means 'The Boys').
The press release runs as follows:
"As Africa’s Leading Hotel Group and founder of Football Friday, it’s no surprise that Southern Sun is home to Bafana Bafana, and has been for 15 years. There’s no better place to house the hopes and dreams of our nation. As the proud host of Bafana Bafana, we stand firmly behind our boys, and we’re calling on all South Africans to do the same.
"Together with 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Talk Radio 702, we’re encouraging all South Africans to stand united, in support of Bafana Bafana. Join us on 9 June from 12:00–14:00 as United We Shall Stand and hold hands in support of Bafana Bafana. We will form a human chain, a line of support through the streets of Sandton, starting and ending at the Southern Sun Grayston – the home of our boys.
"Let us show the world that we’re 100% behind our team and prove that there is nothing more powerful than the power of the people. “United We Shall Stand” is going to be an event not to be missed!
"So put your Bafana Bafana shirt on, stand up tall, and stand united for our boys."
It promises to be a very festive occasion, so enjoy the opportunity to get into the World Cup spirit. Of course if you're Mexican, French or Uruguayan (the other teams in South Africa's group), you could be forgiven for boycotting any event designed to lift the morale of the opposition, but as you've come this far to celebrate this feast of soccer, I don't think that's too likely!
Let the games begin!
