From Sandton station to Park Station??

by MeloLemon

Having arrived at Sandton station from the airport on the Grand Gau, how does one get
from Sandton station to Johannesburg Park Central? I understand there are no trains and I cannot find a J'burg street map with bus routes on them (strike one City Metro bus services!). I'm gathering that one of the major bus stations is near Park station, which one? Ghandi? How far and how do I get to Park station from there? Does anyone have a link to a good downloadable map?

Yours, in transportive exasperation...

Excellent question - I wish I had an answer for you!
Below is the link to the Gautrain buss routes that are currently operational - however, these do not currently extend any further south than Rosebank.
http://join.gautrain.co.za/Assets/Download/Gautrain_bus_route_guides.pdf
The Gautrain link into Park Station is only scheduled to open in June 2011, so the only thing that I can imagine is that the buses will only start to operate in this area after that date.
In the absence of any other information, I would call Gautrain and ask them: the number is 0800GAUTRAIN (0800 428 87246).
Good luck, and please post an answer if you manage to find one, as I'd love to know!

With respect to the second part of your question, what exactly do you mean by 'bus station'?
Park Station is the terminus for long distance buses (what the British would call 'coaches') - Greyhound, SA Roadlink, Magic Bus and Translux all use this facility. The bus station is immediately outside the rail station on the northern fringe of the CBD.
Ghandi Square is a bus terminal for the local Metro buses and Rea Vaya service that covers limited areas of Johannesburg and Soweto. Ghandi Square is located in the CBD a kilometre or so south of Park Station.
The following link should bring you to a map indicating Ghandi Square.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Clowns stopping by your car for a smile!

by jumpingnorman

I got the services of a sixty year old local (man of Zulu tribe) to drive me around Joahnnesburg. I noticed that at street lights there's a lot of people sometimes with cans for collecting coins - some are probably fundraisers and some just for personal income. I saw this man dressed as a clown and what the heck, I waved at him to come over since the car was at a traffioc light and I took a picture and gave him a little token of appreciation. He was thankful and did some nice dance moves for me on the street!

Next to johannesburg there are two cities, first the cosmopolitan sun city, with its own luxury casino, right photos 1 and 2. second the poor BIGEST BLACK city OF THE WORLD name SOVETO left photos number one sobeto, photo no 2 in to soveto NELSONS MANDELA house.

Security, security, security

by Assenczo

The Jo’burg obsession with security reaches some shrilling high note. The height of the brick fences is usually higher than a body and a half. This solid barrier is topped with barbed wire and reinforced with electric wiring. To finish it off in a concentration camp style there is the 75 degree incline towards the exterior. Hence every single house has been turned into a miniature prison with the luxury of leaving it when going to the mall or making money in order to maintain this particular lifestyle which demands high level of security. I wonder what passes through the minds of Mandela and his fellow freedom fighters. I have no impression of South Africa of the apartheid era but if my logic is right it seems that all the wiring from the townships has been torn down and recycled to keep the whites safe into their houses.

I can't really comment much on Jo'burg because I really didn't like the city to begin with... and EVERYONE tells me that it's the world's most dangerous place to be in! So how to enjoy like that? However, in SUN CITY, it's a different story altogether.

Go visit the casino at Sun City's Main Hotel.... Whilst waiting for some friends to arrive for dinner that evening, I popped in several coins (I reckon, less than 10 rand) into the slot machines and within 2 minutes, I'd won approximately 700 rand! If you're not into casinos and gambling, there are 'live' entertainment shows to catch; or you may wish to watch the latest Hollywood movies in their cineplex etc. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a disco or a happening pub here though. Perhaps everyone is too busy gambling their $$$ away?

Taste of Africa

by cokes about Moyo

Hey guys if you looking for a real African meal , Moyo is the place to go to.

I remembered the 1st time I went to this restaurant was with a few friends from Malaysia and Morocco in the heart of winter. Well we sat outside in the cold but it was kinda cool as we were given nice thick blankets and heaters all around our table which kept us warm.

The only thing that bugged me was the Menu , I could`nt understand head or tail what was being served there. Well I knew some of the South African dishes and I was definitely not gone be eating that. Well I guess I just did`nt have a taste for Africa neither did my friends but everyone else seemed to enjoy themselves and the place was packed.

Well we decided to stay and have a latte` and desert , all I can say if you looking for a real African meal , thats the place to be. There is a very nice atmosphere in that place but unfortunately that food did`nt gel too well with me. Well I guess maybe its because the difference in my cultural upbringing. That food is definitely not served in my house.

Well I can`t say anything bad about this , guess if you adventurers .... go and try the food. Its always full & I heard lots of people love the food there. Non
