by schmechi

We have a few hours flyover in Johannesburg and we plan to make a guided tour to Soweto and to visit the aprtheid museeum. Which tour operators would you recommend?

Re: Soweto tours

The museum has guides on site.
It is about 15mins from International Airport- taxi would be best
Address: Northern Parkway and Gold Reef Road, Ormonde, Johannesburg
Telephone: +27 (0)11 309 4700
Times: Tuesday to Sunday 10h00-17h00; Closed on Mondays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

I'll arrive at 10:00 am at the airport and I'll leave at 21:45... Do you think I've got enough time to do both?

Re: Soweto tours

Maybe doing both is cutting it a bit fine- a tour of Soweto is really interestin, and you MAY just have time to fit in the other........see how the time goes.

The Aparthied Museum is on the way to Soweto. If you are out of the airport by 11 you can get to the Aparthied Museum by 11h30 (traffic is free flowing by then). You don't need to spend more than 2 hours there. Leave for Soweto and have lunch at one of the iconic shebeen/restaurants like Wandies near the Hector Pietersen Memorial. Spend the next couple of hours in Soweto and be back at the airport by 6.

Check out some of these guys and I am sure that one of them will be able to offer you a special package based on the number of hours you are going to have available. I think your bet is to get someone who will pick you up, do both tours and get you back to the airport on time.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

World Summit 2002

by crazyguitar

United Nations World Summit 2002 was held in Jo´burg during my stay. I´ve been there for almost 7 weeks, it means I was there before, during and after the event.
At the beginning I knew the real Johannesburg living there just with the natives, it was great. During the summit the city changed, the best point was to meet and share experiences with people from all over the world, it was a real multicultural metropolis. It was interesting to see everyday different protesting groups, from oppressed Tibetans to anti-globalization militants.
When the event finished the city returned to the normality.

Tipping at restaurants is 10%....

Tipping at restaurants is 10%. Due to the long history of segregation, you may notice the tensions between Afrikaans and Africans. In an effort to move forward, extend kindness and respect to All peoples equally. When taking photos, it is polite to ask the persons BEFORE taking the photo. We are visiting a wonderful country with great people. Please, remember that we are not gawking at zoo animals, a mistake I have seen many tourists make! Don't take photos of governmental buildings, as it is illegal.

Kruger National Park

by Jenniflower

This world famous National Park in South Africa was founded in 1898 and is just under 2 million hectares in size in total.

It is, to me, so much more than a piece of the planet where flora, fauna and animal are preserved and protected, it speaks of a childhood spent in avid attention of the detail and attention to life that this park offers.

I have been here many a time and have never been disappointed.

The Park is massive and boasts large herds of animals in varying shape and form, an example being when a herd of over 500 buffalo were seen crossing in front of us when we were on our way out of the park at sunset in 2002! Click on the buffalo pic to see what I mean by 'being watched' :)

The South end is the more popular end... where there seem to be more animals... in the north there are more elephants... (in the south there are plenty of elephants too!).

Mixed Session

by cokes about Cafe Vacca Matta

This is nice stylish Restaurant and later into the night it turns into a very stylish Night Club with great music.

Vacca Matta is probably one of Johannesburg's hottest nightspots, featuring some of the country's top dancers, DJs and music. However, what makes Vacca Matta brilliant is its celebrity pull. Many a local star and high profile individual grace its dance floor, tables and bar and this is what gives Matta that edge over other joints in Gauteng. It has also won the Ladies Night venue by the Leisure Options awards. Dress Smart

There is a really cool restaurant in Capetown called Bunt Huys. It is in an old building with NO signage but the meals are top notch and the atmosphere funky!
Its an old warehouse. You walk down a back alley and climb into the place through a slightly elevated door. The kitchen is open. Breast of Duck with Gooseberry sauce.
