One night in Johannesburg, what is a must do. Will be this Friday night!!

by hrlandry

We are arriving to Johannesburg at 3pm and fly out the next morning. Want to do something Friday night.

We are staying at the Michelangelo in Sandton. I was thinking of just heading to Montecasino or Gold Reef. How would we get there? Which one is closer, which one is better? How much would a taxi cab be to get there?

Or if we decide to stay in Sandton, what is a good restaurant? read about Carnivore...

Defiantly not the "carnivore" you can not find a quality food there
If you are here only for one night and staying in Sandton your best bet is Monte Casino
and If you are a meat lover you can go to Meat Company excellent stakes and ribs. (if you don't eat pork their beef ribs are excellent)
There is a theater in the complex and if you are lucky try to get tickets to the "Lion King" one of the best productions in the world. The bird show in Monte Casino is Uniqe but it is during the day
one show at 11 am ant the other at 15:00
Hope you enjoy the very short time you are here, next time try to stay longer.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

by Jenniflower

The Ndebele are a related group, who live in the Northern Transvaal in strikingly painted houses.

They have very traditional beliefs and culture, especially in the rural areas of South Africa.

In the cities they have become more westernised, as their culture has intermingled with others.

Visit Soccer City, the World Cup 2010 final venue!

by CatherineReichardt

(work in progress)
For those who weren't lucky enough to be here for the World Cup 2010 (or didn't manage to get tickets to the games) the Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust is offering a walking tour of Soccer City (now known as FNB Stadium), which was the venue for the opening match and final of the tournament on Saturday 14 November. I was there for the Germany vs Ghana group game, and can attest to the fact that it is a stunning structure and arguably one of the most beautiful sports stadia in the world!
The blurb from the website goes as follows:
"For those who weren’t lucky enough to see a match during the World Cup this is a most exciting outing. The stadium has its own extraordinary history. It was here Nelson Mandela was welcomed home to Jo’burg and to his place in history. Chris Hani’s funeral was held here as South Africa held its breath and the miracle happened. Then came the World Cup and a stadium which glittered in the evening light, ringing to the blast of the vuvuzelas in the biggest venue of them all.
"You don’t have to like soccer or rugby to be proud of this achievement. The guide is provided by the FNB Stadium.
MEET : Pascale Petit
PARK : FNB Stadium
DURATION : Approximately one hours
COST : R110.00 includes entrance fee of R80.00 per person
MAX No : 30"

Different nice clubs to go

by crazyguitar about Rivonia Mall Area

In that area is plenty of nightclubs. Some names: Rapsodhy´s : white twit people and beautiful blond women, Saints: mixed public (black and white). Retro: more alternative, mixed and young people. The Venue: white twit people. News café. A lively bar with mainly white people. Informal in most of them.

Real old style African food

by sunscreen about Gramadoelas

Gramadoelas (the name is a colloqual Afrikaans word meaning 'in the middle of nowhere') is owned by this wonderful old gay couple who've had it for decades and still cook up a very decent meal. It's fusion African food, meaning you'll find some traditional Afrikaner food such as bobotie, some strange stuff (dried mopanie worms) and stuff from the rest of Africa. It's by far one of the most unique restaurants in Johannesburg, and while some may argue it's past its prime I would recommend it highly. The ambience and decor is truly Johannesburg, and hosts are wonderful, chatty and wells of information.

by junecorlett about Verdicchio

Another great place to eat within Monte Casino.
Anything for starters from Ostrich, snails, insalata, pasta and meat.

Starters are between R45 and R80.

Insalata about R50

Pasta and Meat approx R90

Good value for money, great atmosphere.
