Any member who resides in johannesburg, south africa to please tell me how best i can enjoy my 3 weeks holiday over there.

Re: holiday in july

Three weeks just in JHB is a bit long.

Few things to do:

1. Gold Reef City
2. Montecasino
3. Zoo
4. Nice shopping Malls : Rosebank (go to the roof top market on a Sunday); Sandton City;
5. Melville for interesting coffee shops and art and craft shops
6. Newtown - Market theatre
7. Tour to Pilansberg and Sun City (1 1/2 hour from JHB)
8. If you have transport go to Hartebeespoort Dam and LEsedi Cultural Village; Cradle of Humankind; Goblin's Cove.
9. Soweto tour
10.If you are intersted in Art and Museums - look on google for Art Galleries and Museums - Everard Reed is a nice gallery; Standard Bank Art gallery is also nice and so is the JHB art gallery.
11. Civic theatre has good shows.

That's what I can think of at the moment.

Enjoy!!

In case you don't know it, Johannesburg gets very cold in July, at night. The temperatures drop below freezing. This could be unexpected for you from Nigeria.

Re: holiday in july

Gerald is right. Last year July was icy cold. Make sure you bring enough warm clothes. During the day it warms up but nights are normally cold to very cold.

3 weeks in Johannesburg is way too long. There is not much to do for a leisure tourist and the weather can be quite cold and miserable. I would definitely go to Durban for a few days. The weather is far better as they generally have warm days and cool evenings. I would also personally prefer to be at the coast than stuck in Joburg for three whole weeks! Cape Town is obviously a great highlight but the weather is not good in July.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

The lay of the land

by Jenniflower

South Africa is made up of 9 provinces, some small, some large, with the 2 small countries of Swaziland and Lesotho landlocked within it's borders.

The smallest province, Gauteng, is the most productive of all provinces in South Africa.

Large and Lovely

by cokes about East Gate Shopping Mall

Well its a very nice shopping mall, it has everyhting that a good shopping mall has from Great Designer Stores , Department Stores , Good Restuarants to name a few. Well Anything and everything. Unfortunately everyhting has a set price here.

Park Station

by cokes

Well the station has been upgraded and looks quiet nice inside , you can get anything there from a train that goes around JHB and to other parts of the country as well as all the bus services to various parts of the countries.

There is quiet a bit of restaurants there so if you hungry it will not be a problem.

Clearwater's Cafe Fino

by Jenniflower about Cafe Fino

A bustling upmarket cafe in a newish, circular-shaped mall, Clearwater.

It serves superb food, and the service is cheerful and friendly (and accurate!).

There is a handy play area for kiddies close by. THis play area services the whole food court area, so you do need to stay with your child whilst they play, as it is not enclosed or supervised by anyone.

One lovely feature here is the mall's transparent roof opens sometimes. It is really lovely... walking through a mall with no roof over you! The smoothies are worth a special mention for sure! They are just the right consistency, and not too rich/lacking in flavour.

Delicious!

I had a ham and cheese trammezzini, it was toasted and I was well-pleased. Too much food though, I had to leave some.

The others had salads and chicken wraps, which were also very nicely presented, fresh and crisp. I am quite fussy about freshness of food, especially salads.. and they are very good here.

Decent quantities too!
