Bus Service

by cacosta

Is it easy (and safe) for a single (female) traveler to take a bus from Johannesburg to Tzaneen?

Re: Bus Service

by anton64

It is fine but my suggestion would be to drive yourself, depending on time available etc.

Re: Bus Service

I agree with Anton.

The car rental compnay I use is here:

Thanks but I drive on the wrong side of the road!

Yes to both your questions. SA has a well developed intercity bus network and these are of good quality and safe for you to travel on. However, you need to be careful at the bus stations at either end. Preferably I would catch a bus from Pretoria station rather that Jhb Stn. This has nothing to do with your being female. Also be extra careful about traveling at night. Make sure that you are being met at your destination.
Check out www.greyhound.co.za or www.intercity.co.za or www.saroadlink.co.za.
Have an amazing trip and experience.

My mother-in-law did that trip by bus every year until she turned 75 three years ago.

Re: Bus Service

Bus service to most cities in SA is ok. The problem is much more on how to get to and from the central bus station in Park station safely.Once your within the terminal area, its relatively safe, but its visitors parking area needs maximum awareness for safety.

I usually take the Rissik st. parking area and entrance where there are less people hanging around. The ground area entrance and parking area is too busy, and a group could easily gang up on you without being noticeable and get what they want in a matter of seconds. Thats what one of our visitor experienced a while back. Good thing he was not carrying anything valuable with him. I sually ask my visitors who needs to be picked up in the park station to stay within terminal area and wait for me to find them within.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Go on a safari.

by Krystynn

Yes, no trip to Africa is complete without embarking on a safari!

Well, we actually went for TWO safaris - one in early dawn (at 6 am!! Yawn....) and the other one was in the evening.... My cohorts and I... oops, I mean, my friends and I conquered the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, located just a few minutes away from our hotel here at SUN CITY. It was indeed a very memorable experience. ;-)

Golf anyone?

by Jenniflower

Golf is quite popular in some circles!

My brother plays a lot, as do some friends, mostly guys.

There are quite a few really lovely local golf courses, like Randpark Golf Course... and further out, Sun City of course, with a spectacular golf course!

International competitions are held annually here, one being the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

One of the most well known South African golfing sportsmen is Gary Player. He was around before the Ernie Els era, and (to me) paved the way for budding sportsmen and women in this field.

I particularly enjoy mini golf, or adventure golf... at Fourways Mall or Randburg Waterfront (now called Brightwater Common).

The biggest mall in South Africa

by crazyguitar about Sandton City

You can buy all you want in Sandton. There is one big shopping mall in Sandton City. According to the Peugeot guide this is the biggest mall in Southern Africa. Natives say is the biggest one in the Southern hemisphere, I donĀ“t think so. A supermarket is Woolworth. Parking costs you 4 Rand per hour Expensive shops there.

by cherise

Hire a car! The legitimate taxi's are pretty pricey, the so called 'black' taxis are not the safest, (altho' they are OK to use in Cape Town), and finding your way around JHB isn't particularly difficult. Try a reputable company like Avis, Hertz, Budget etc, all of which have terminals at the airport. For intercity travel, flights are probably best. Cheapest fares seem to be Sabena Nationwide, but check with your agent. I'd give inter-city bus travel a skip.

by junecorlett about Ciao Baby

Ciao Baby is an Italian Restaurant.
On the menu ; pizzas, calzones, pasta or a steak/chicken/seafood/ or veal if you like.
