2 Days in Johannesburg!!!

by Paio77

My mom and i are flying there in October and we are going to spend 2 nights before continue our vacation in Namibia, can somebody tell me which area is the best to stay at a hotel? We are looking for one not so expensive and that we can go out for a walk...we are not mall shoppers....we would love to see local things and maybe take a tour? If we only have two days what is the best to do????

Thank you so much!!! i cant wait!!!

There are a lot of Hotels in the Sandton area ranging from expensive to budget. Try fit in a trip to the Apartheid museum its worth it really interesting. Otherwise Rosebank has a few small hotels. Soweto tour a must and range from half day to full day.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Jacarandas in bloom

by sunscreen202

If you're visiting around October, you'll see Johannesburg's thousands of Jacaranda trees covered in purple flowers. They line the streets, and as the flowers start dropping the roadsides are covered with a carpet of purple petals.

Cultural Diversity

by Jenniflower

The Afrikaners have a very distinct culture of their own, from their dress to their art.

Today's rural communities are still quite conservative in most ways.

The majority of European (white) South Africans are of British extraction (like me and my husband!).

There is also a large and influential Jewish population and Indian minority.

The 'coloured' community has a very unique and 'colourful' culture all of their own :)

The lowveld ~ Mpumalanga

by Jenniflower

This is one of the most naturally majestic provinces in South Africa.

With so many natural wonders, lush and green vegetation and a real touch of Africa. From waterfalls to canyons, wild bush landscape to mountains and caves.

I have visited here often through the years and never cease to wonder at its magnificence. There is so much to do here.

It is of course well known for its abundance of game and wildlife too, the most famout one being Kruger National Park of course.

If you are coming (driving) here from Johannesburg, make sure to stop at Millie’s, where you can sip a beer whilst watching trout in the lake there. There is also a lovely fishing shop and a craft shop, which has some delectable traditional munchies like guava rolls, biltong, droe wors, homemade jams and chutneys etc.

The art and crafts that come out of this area are incredible too... all kinds of wooden (most often made from jackleberry wood), wire and tin craft, basket craft etc.

Night club,

by Alpha_Ghana about the Calabash

During the week: rought bar with strip teases. However, the atmosphere is kind and there is no vulgarity.
During the weekend: the night starts very early, like 10:30 and finishes late in the morning, like 9:00AM. Good international and South African music.
95% black people, no too much harrasment from girls. Cool, casual, crazy...

Steakhouse

by mirko_p about The Bull Run restaurant

On our first evening in South Africa we decided to try this restaurant. It's a very nice steakhouse and the food was very good.
(For americans and canadians: In my opinion this restaurant is like "Morton's steakhouse" chain for quality of food and service, but of course a lot cheaper). We had a huge beef Fillet with baked potato and fresh fruits as dessert.
The fillet was perfectly cooked and tender.
