Just by the airport...

by Gili_S about Tambo Town Lodge

We used this Tambo Town Lodge just on the day of arrival, after all day on the air from Europe to South Africa we arrived to Johannesburg at night and went straight for this hotel for a one night stay before getting into our road trip the next morning. Nothing special, just 10 minutes from the airport and the breakfast was OK.

Accommodation in South Africa

by CharleneP about Hotels, Lodges & Guest Houses are everywhere

The quality of tourist accommodation is very good. There is a wide choice of places to stay like 5 Star Hotels, Holiday Inn, Country Houses, City Lodge & Town Lodge, Game Camps, Guesthouses & B&B. The standards are high and the prices are low.

by CharleneP about Town Lodge & City Lodge

The Town Lodge is quite good and not so expensive than the hotels. I enjoyed my stay there! Big rooms, good service NICE food, pool & the people are very friendly.

Johannesburg hotel

by yumiyun

Hi,

I need find an overnight accommodation in Johannesburg for a stopover. Which are the recommended hotels for business executive, but not so expensive. Also, I am trying to figure out how to transfer between the airport and hotel. Is there any hotels with transfer service?

Thanks

City Lodge Hotel near the airport - they have a shuttle bus. A popular businessman's hotel.

Re: Johannesburg hotel

by cleocat

Hi

I live in Kempton Park the airport is 5 min away. Around the airport there is the city lodge, a holiday inn and another hotel 2min away from the terminals (no idea what the name is but if you are interested I can find out without a problem). There are also several guest houses with shuttle busses very close to the airport (again if you are intersted i'll send you the info)

The hotels also have shuttle's. If you want to go to JHB (+- 20km from airport) there are also a few hotels with shuttle busses.

Hope it helps

Are you living in Polokwane (Pietersburg) or Pretoria yet - I remember your February question and see that you have South Africa as your VT home now? Well, I really hope that you are enjoying it!

The City Lodge hotel only serves breakfast, a very good breakfast. There are some restaurants about 100 meters away, but it is a lonely, dark 100 meters at night.

On the other side of the highway, is the Town Lodge, Road Lodge and Formula One hotel, with at least one restaurant directly next door to them. Maybe the Town Lodge (or Road Lodge) will suit you better:

Hi, Gerald,

Thank you so much for the info. The website is quite helpful.

Yes, I did move to Polokwane recently. Never really thought I wanted to come to South Africa on my own, but this is a beautiful country!

cheers,

I might be in Polokwane next week - will keep an eye out for someone that resembles your picture up there to the left. :-)

hi
Does anyone know if there are there any hotels in the actual JHB international airport?
Where does one stay for an overnight before a very early morning flight?

thanks

There is a Sun Intercontinental hotel in JNB, about a three-minute walk from the terminal building. (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ic/1/en/hd/JNBHC)

Also, there are plenty of cheaper hotels along the highway leading to the airport, about a 5-10 minute drive away.

RE: RE: jhb airport hotels

by elanaten

thanks travelmad - will contact them immediately

RE: RE: jhb airport hotels

The hotels a bit further away might be cheaper than the Southern Sun and they all have shuttle busses to collect you at the airport.

RE: jhb airport hotels

by Gerald_D

I normally use the City Lodge - they share a shuttle bus with their sister hotels across the R24 road being the Town Lodge and Road Lodge. See them listed here:

and here: http://www.citylodge.co.za/

If you looking for a Hostel option try www.africacentre.co.za they collect you free from Airport and charge about R60 to drop you off next morning... , for a budget single room they charge R150

Hi Erica, Peewee here, your friend could go to the Hotel formula one near the airport, very cheap for one night accomodation and three people can share the room. dont neccessarily have to share ,that is only if you have some friends there with you otherwise by yourself is fine, really safe and trouble free,DONT GO TO THE CITY OF JOHANNESBURG ITSELF.NOT PLEASANT AT ALL!!!!.
rather staay on the East Rand ,close to JNB international airport.the prices are less than r200 a night.
ok hotel formula one

Re: Re: Safe Accommodation

by janiac

We were looking into this several years ago because we had a long layover, and people told us there was a Holiday Inn, I believe, attached to the airport with decent rates.

Re: Re: Safe Accommodation

by PEE-WEE

Holiday inn might be a bit pricey although it is attached to the airport.

Re: Safe Accommodation

by claus9000

I can recommend the City Lodge and the Town Lodge in the surroundings of the airport. They are cheap and good, and cheaper than the Holiday Inns. They have a website, www.citylodge.co.za.
The Formule 1 hotels in South Africa are usually no good choice.

Travel Tips for Johannesburg

Great cappucino

by cleocat about Cafe Europe

One of the best cuppucino's I had in a long time. Big cup, well priced and made with foam not cream. I don't like cream. Nice cake selection. We shared a piece of pepermint crisp tart and a piece of tiramisu. Gary didn't like the tiramisu but I thought it was very nice. Moist and tasty. The pepermint crisp tart was delicous. Ola Milky Lane - ice cream sundaes!

by sue_stone about Ola Milky Lane

Ola Milky Lane is a chain of Ice cream parlours. We visited the branch in the Greenstone mall, in Edenvale. It was afternoon tea time and we needed a sweet treat. The friendly staff seated us in a comfortable booth and kindly bought us a couple of big glasses of water, whilst we decided what calorific treat to eat.

The colourful menu is filled with pictures of tempting ice cream sundaes, and although we were feeling piggy, we decided it was best to just share something - thankfully, as our choice was pretty big! We decided on the 'Monster Sundae' with ice cream, brownie, hot fudge sauce, cream and chopped nuts. It was tasty but very sweet and it wasn't long before we had demolished most of it and felt comfortably ill, if you know what I mean!
