Faerie Glen housing area

by filboy

We just got our housing assignment, and it will be in Faerie Glen. Can anyone tell me about this area, and the surrounding amenities. Is it close to shopping, restaurants, movie houses etc? Is there a shopping mall close by?

One of the nearby malls:

Faerie Glen comes to mind as a desirable location in Pretoria, but I don't know it intimately.

You will be close to Menlyn Centre. All the shops, restaurants, movies etc will be there. Menlyn centre is in Attebury road. It is one of the biggest if not the biggest mall in SA.

Thanks everyone for the info. We were informed that it's a nice area, but the traffic could be a problem, trying to get across one of the main highway. It was suggested that "Waterkloof" would be a better area.

Waterkloof is more "sterile" - lots of houses with high walls and few shops/restaurants.

Why did the tortoise cross the road.......

What area are you working in? Maybe you don't have to cross the N1 (Eastern Bypass) at all.

Our office will be in the Arcadia area. They said that it's about 20-30 minutes drive from Faerie Glen, but some say it could take as long as an hour because of the traffic.

I think Waterkloof will be a bit closer but you will still get caught up in the traffic. The travelling time between faerie glen/ waterkloof glen and Arcadia shouldn't be more than 10/15 minutes but in peak traffic I can believe it can take up to an hour. The areas closer to Arcadia is Hatfield and Sunnyside but you don't want to stay there. It is mainly flats in any case. Sorry!!!

Travel Tips for Pretoria

If you're into...

by jansezl

If you're into architecture...visit the Union Buildings a very historic present and past. Also definitely visit the Pretoria State Theatre - very diverse and cultural. Chill out and mingle with the locals at any of the major centres - Menlyn, Hatfield and Brooklyn. Local nature reserves surrounding Pretoria is a must see! Actually, i'm originally from Durban - a port and city on the African east-coast - I miss the deep blue. But when I'm away from Pretoria, I crave the local live Jazz concerts, cosmopolitan city, restaurants and natural resorts.

Venning Park

by Bushman23

Just down the road from the American Embassy, not too far from the Union Buildings, & within walking distance from hatfield, Venning Park is ideally situated. It's not huge, but it is reasonably quiet, with beautiful gardens, and a Tea garden in the center. Perfect for a nice, relaxing picnic, even with kids. (They have a Jungle jim, etc...)
