Mazuri

Has anyone ever stayed at the Mazuri Backpackers in Pretoria?
Re: Mazuri
by Vikings
Hi Csilla,
I looked at your travel plans...it looks interesting, i wish i had 3 months holiday :( Anyway, for hostels in Pretoria i would recommend the followwing : http://www.coastingafrica.com/Region.asp?RegionID=13&Level=2 and http://www.furnays.co.za/ (i drove past this lovely new place last week and it looks great and secure). Depending on your needs in terms of location i would choose one from the coastingafrica.com site. Nothing against Sunnyside (Mazuri location) but some of the others are better. Welcome if you have some more questions. Good luck !

Thanks for the tips Samuel, but we need to pick specifically from the list of hostels that the Baz bus stops at. Actually, we're staying with friends in Pretoria, but since the bus leaves so early in the morning, we thought we'd better spend the night before we set off at one of the hostels. So it's not really a biggie if the place turns out to be a dud, it's just always nice to have a second opinion.
BTW, I don't think of it as "3 months holiday", I think of it as "3 months living!!!".

go for Hatfield
rather than Sunnyside area.
enjoy the City
;-)))
Re: getting up early
by csistok
Well, it would be as much for our convenience as theirs, since the bus comes right to the door and it would mean we wouldn't have to get up quite so early either! But I guess once we arrive at our friends' we'll figure out soon enough what kind of schedule they're on. thanks for the tip, though, it never crossed my mind that we might offend them
Re: Hatfield

kenHuocji, is there a particular reason you recommend Hatfield over Sunnyside?
Re: Re: Hatfield

anytime,
being in the student area, weekends are more hyped.
Newscafe for watching people,
PiknPay across the road for a bag of deli for the picnic lunch,
Pretoria University, Tukkies has a fine collection of art work , including the Eduardo Villa and oriental collection.
also the Mapungubwe collection is housed in the Anrthopology dept;
the Botany dept have plabted the grounds with indigenous plants, a mini botanical garden and much much more.
have fun ;-)))

So I guess your saying there's just more to do in the Hatfield area? I'll keep that in mind, although most of the "sightseeing" portion of our stay will be when we're with our friend (who lives in a place called Faerie Glen, by the way. Sounds cool, must be out in the 'burbs somewhere, I imagine).
Travel Tips for Pretoria
Public transport arrangements for World Cup
by CatherineReichardt
Details on the public transport arrangements for the World Cup stadia continue to be issued in drips and drabs. The most comprehensive and user-friendly useful summary I've seen was from Prega Govender in this morrning's Sunday Times - follow this link: http://www.timeslive.co.za/sport/soccer/article477498.ece/How-to-get-there
Please note that private vehicles (including taxis) will NOT be allowed close to the stadia, so if you are planning to travel to the stadia in your own or someone else's vehicle, be prepared for a long walk (and potentially problems finding your taxi pick up after the game).
LOFTUS VERSFELD, PRETORIA
Free Park and Ride/Walk: Spectators will be given a colour-coded arm band to identify the parking zone where they left their car.
On match days, these facilities will open four hours before kickoff.
Transport hub: Pretoria Station and City Hall parking area.
A special long-distance coach service will operate from the City Hall on Paul Kruger Street to host cities such as Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein and Polokwane.
Transport options for those travelling to Pretoria to attend matches: shuttle from/to Joburg and Sandton and special long-distance coaches operating from June 10-27.

The inside Shrine that Honours the Heroes .
by Waalewiener
The Voortrekkers building is constructed in a way that on the day of December 16 the rays of the sunlight will shine upon the Cenotaph that Honours the Heroes. The inscription on the Cenotaph says Ons vir jou Zuid Afrika.!
This means in English We for you South Africa.
mountain or hill climbing
by nora_south_africa
Pretoria is situated in the Eastern Magaliesberg Mountains. Here are some of the mountains and hills in the area.
Bronberg
Cable Hill
Daspoortrand
Diamond Hill
Klapperkop
Kwaggasrand
Langeberge
Meintjieskop
Pyramid Koppies
Skanskop
Skurweberg
Thaba Tshwane/Voortrekkerhoogte
Waterberg
These are not very high mountains so easy for climbing, just dont go alone and dont carry valubles... careful of snakes, take good comfortable shoes. I used to love to do this cause Pretoria being surrounded by mountains and hills, you can get the most stunning views!!
IMAX
by PierreZA
The IMAX theatre is in the Menlyn Shopping Mall.
It has several shows every day.
Being in the Menlyn Park Mall, there are plenty of other entertainment and plenty restaurants to choose from.
The monie scedule can be found at the website in this tip.
