music to go
by ccmusic
What are the most common languages spoken in Pretoria? Is English spoken by enough people for us to communicate easily or should we try to at least learn a little of another language? We will be traveling there in Dec. 2009, so we have some time to plan.

Even though it is not the predominant first language, I think it is still widely used and known.
It has been a number of years since I was there though.

English will get you around easily. No need to learn another language, nor would it be easy to suggest a particular alternative language. It would depend on which community you would be moving around with.

Hi...I live in Pretoria...English is the language spoken in all businesses, and is now the pedominant language used as a means of communication. There is absolutely no need to learn another language.
You will have a great time.

You will have no problems communicating in English. Having said that, it is always a good idea to immerse yourself in local culture as much as is possible and greeting someone in their own language, for example, is a sign of respect and good manners.
Afrikaans is a national language and spoken throughout South Africa, and very much so in Pretoria.
Zulu and Xhosa are also spoken by a significant proportion of people, even though these two ethnic groups are 'family' belonging to the Nguni people. Zulu emanates from KwaZulu-Natal and Xhosa from the Eastern Cape.
For a basic introduction to Afrikaans, do a search for Afrikaans lessons on You Tube or My Happy Planet.

Voortrekker Monument: It is a magnificent building. The reliefs on the wall sourrounding it portrays some of the stories of the Voortrekkers.
The monument is built so that every year, on December 16 (the anniversary of the battle at the Blood River, which is also my birthday!) at 12 noon the sunlight will fall onto the Shrine of Honour in the Heroes' Hall. There is inscription saying 'Ons vir jou, Zuid Afrika!' (We for you, South Africa!).
National Botanical Garden
by nxlink
This beautiful garden is located only 8 km from downtown Pretoria. Spread out on 76 ha are all types of South African plants. The major areas of the garden inlcude a cycad garden, a succulent garden, an aloe collection, a savannah garden and woodland garden. There is also a man made waterfall that is very interesting. The views from the high point of the garden are impressive. It is a wonderful place to spend a warm afternoon walking, reading, or just contemplating. Included on the grounds are a tea house and gift shop.

Union buildings
by mvtouring
I cannot help but look at this building with so much pride. For many of us South Africans the Union Building is the most beautiful government residence in the world. Sir Herbert Baker was the architect of this 275 m long building and had it built in the English monumental style from light sandstone. It does indeed look majestic and lends a solemn environment to the official acts of the respective President. The Union Building has a half-round shape. The two wings at the sides represent the Boerish and the English part of the population.
