Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum

by dwedmunds

Back in the 90's when visiting Pretoria I took a number of photo's but there are a few that I cannot identify the location;I think they may be of the Willem Prinsloo Museum. One is of a statue of a pair of yolked Oxen, outside a fairly modern building. Another is of a Cannon, with large wheels, on a concrete base, located near a white-painted bungalow with a veranda & red-painted steps. I realise that all this might have changed over the years but if anyone can identify the photo locations I'd be very pleased.

Post the pics on your homepage, then someone might have a better idea.

Cannon at the agricultural museum sounds unlikely.

The Pioneer Museum in Silverton, Pretoria is sometimes confused with the Willem Prinsloo Museum - the former may have the cannon.

Thanks for the reply. I e-mailed the Pioneer museum & they identified the photo's.

museums are worthy of visits, and if you have special interest, make a point of meeting the academics in the backrooms - south Africa is down under below the Equator, and international contact is somewhat limited due to weak currency and unfounded fears on some notable foreigners ;-((( It being the adminstrative capital of the Apartheid and post Apartheid South Africa.

The Voortrekker Monument tracks South Africa´s history pretty much since it was discovered. It has some wonderful art, a very enlightening museum, and some of the best possible views of Pretoria. A must see!

Entrance fee is about R25 per person

Voortrekker Monument

by PierreZA

The Voortrekker Monument is very visible, as it is built on 'n "koppie" (hill). The massive granite structure, built to honour the Voortrekkers (Pioneers) who left the Cape Colony in their thousands between 1835 and 1854, was designed by the architect Gerard Moerdijk. It is a large granite structure. The Cenotaph, situated in the centre of the Cenotaph Hall, is the central focus of the monument. Through an opening in this dome the sun shines at twelve o'clock on 16 December each year onto the middle of the Cenotaph and the words 'Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika' (Afrikaans for 'We for Thee, South Africa'). The ray of sunshine is said to symbolise God's blessing on the lives and endeavours of the Voortrekkers. December 16 was chosen as it was on this date in 1838 that the Battle of Blood River (against the Zulu) was fought. Some hate it, some love it, visit this historical monument to learn a lot of the Afrikaner history of the country.
The area was previously called Voortrekker Hoogte (Pioneer Heights), but after 1994 changed to Thaba Tshwane.

UNION BUILDING

by CharleneP

The gardens is outstanding and the building it self is beautiful. You can walk through the gardens. It is used since the first free and common elections in South Africa in 1994 the Union Building has been the seat of Ex-President Nelson Mandela for the winter season.
