Lisbon Falls by Waxbag The Green Castle Backpackers, located just outside Graskop, is a great base for exploring the surrounding country. You are at the beginning of the R532 that goes to God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon, and many falls including Lisbon Falls. Going the other directions on the R532 you are near Pilgrim’s Rest and Sabie. There is dorm and camping available here. The grass is good and security is not a problem. There is a large communal area and satisfactory cooking area (boiling water can be tough). The most interesting part about this place is Andre, the very eccentric owner. He has many great stories and desires an unbelievable amount of attention. He knows a lot about the Kruger as well. Camping is R35 each. Dorm is R 60 each. It is located outside of town. From the center of town cross the rail bridge towards Sabie and turn left. Go two blocks and turn left. Two more blocks on the left.

We were enroute Kruger National Park to Johannesburg, so only needed one night stayover at this hotel... and we wish we had more time there! It was such a good hotel!!! The accommodation, huge pool, service, food, gallery artwork... all are to a high standard and worth recommending. You have the choice of staying in the hotel itself (big building), or in one of the garden rooms... which is what we chose. It's quite Roman in feel... with a central garden with sculptured figurines... surrounded on three sides by the garden rooms. Each room has tea and coffee facilities, a TV, spacious bathroom, a separate area with a cupboard and space for your suitcase (they cater so well for travellers here!), and the furnishings are contemporary and luxurious.
The unique quality lies in it's slogan: "An art gallery you can sleep in..." ... for it is exactly that! There is artwork in the form of paintings, sculptures, woodwork, industrial design, furniture etc. all around you. Whilst you enjoy your breakfast (in front of an open fire), or your dinner... you spend your time looking around at all the incredible artwork. Most of it is modern and contemporary - there is a really good mix here, from a wide variety of artists. Each hotel room depicts a certain artist whose paintings are in the room... they then co-ordinate the room furnishings and decor around the paintings colours and style. They also offer meals to non residents, providing they have the space, so it's worth calling them.. as their food is amazing! I will do a separate restaurant tip for the hotel as it is stand-alone.

We found ourselves at the Mogodi more through accident than anything else: it was about the only place with a vacancy, even though it was a little pricier than we might have liked. That said, we had, what was in effect a bungalow all to ourselves. There was a restaurant, which had quite decent food at reasonable prices, available on-site as well as a pool just outside our door. Unhappily, being mid-winter, we didn't take advantage of the facility... The room was very roomy with two double beds, TV, and a very well-appointed bathroom. Typically for South Africa, there was NO central heating. Although we did have an electric heater that looked like a radiator, it may as well have been a free-standing sculture for all the good it did us. That said, there were plenty of blankets and extra pillows, so we didn't suffer any more than we did anywhere else during the trip.
Two things stand out about the Mogodi: First, it's located right at the edge of the Graskop Gorge with the falls and a bizarre sort of "cable car" -- more of a bosun's chair, actually -- that will carry you, for a very reasonable fee across the 100meter width of the three or four hundred meter deep gorge! Second: the place has its own mini-church. Why? I have no idea; I didn't ask, either!
