Travel Tips for Hermanus

by mvtouring

This is one of those places you have heard the joke about. Miss the hotel and you miss the town. It is a very small village on the east coast with a hotel and a light house. Few houses scattered about. The hotel is infamous for their rourkous parties.

"Hermanus has everything to offer"

Not only is Hermanus known as one of the best landbased whale watching destinations it is also a quaint little town with modern shopping facilities which offer 7 days a week shopping. The restaurants offer a diverse array of foods and the cliff top at Village Square has some outstanding lunchtime venues with fantastic views over the ocean. During Whale season one can spot the whales whilst having lunch.

"Hermanus has great Swimming beaches"

A lot of visitors travel no further than the Village Centre and are not aware that Hermanus has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Western Cape. 5 Kms. from the Village Centre travelling in the direction of Stanford - there are several swimming beaches one of which a Blue Flag Status beach - Grotto beach. Grotto beach is a huge sandy beach stretching for kms along 'Die Plaat' and is the most popular beach in Hermanus. There are several smaller beaches and then of course Voëlklip Beach which is very popluar with the surfers. This beach has some grass areas which is terrassed. Whilst visiting Hermanus make use of the opportunity to go sea kayaking - I don't think there is a better way of watching the whales than kayaking in the sea. it is an unforgettable experience.

"View over Hermanus"

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve has over 50 kms of hiking trail with panoramic views over Walker Bay. The seafront cliff path stretches from Grotto Beach to the new Harbour and it is also wheelchair friendly. Hermanus has a lot more than whales to offer. Within a 50 km radius you can visit Gansbaai from where you can partake in Great White Shark viewing excursions , nearby Betty's Bay is home to a penguin colony at Stony Point as well as the Harold Porter Botanical garden. There are several Baboon troops living in the mountains above Hermanus. Walking along the cliff path you will often see the Dassie (rock rabbit) on the rocks or in the bushes.
