Excellent accommodation by TheWanderingCamel I've spent 3 nights in Kruger altogether -each time at a different Rest Camp. Berg-en-dal was my first experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are so many different places you can stay in the park, either at private or park-owned camps. The Park camps are definitely more reasonable in cost and are more than adequate if all you are after is somewhere to stay the night, but that's up to the individual, both in terms of their budget and the experience they are after. Berg-en-dal is the nearest camp to the Malelane gate in the park's south. There is a restaurant and a shop where you can buy both souvenirs and essential food and grocery items. The location is both rugged and heavily wooded. All the camps in Kruger offer accommodation of one sort or another, ranging from simple floored tents to luxurious cottages in a variey of styles - all at prices to suit what is offered. Prices are set at standard rates throughout the park for each class of accommodation. Booking ahead is essential, the earlier the better - especially at school holiday times - as the park is a favourite with South Africans and visitors alike
This was my idea of a great accommodation option. A spacious, comfortable, well-equipped cottage, air-conditioned, screened for insects, braai (barbecue) and outdoor seating, lots of hot water, and built far enough away from the cottage next door to be quiet and private - what more could you ask for?

See you back at the hotel by TheWanderingCamel Easter and school holidays meant we couldn't book another night in the partk itself at Kruger, so we did the next best thing and stayed at the Protea Hotel just outside the Paul Kruger Gate. It was very nice - set in lovely gardens, with big, comfortable rooms, good service, an excellent buffet dinner included in the tarriff and a yummy breakfast ( great curried vegetables amongst a table groaning with goodies) both served in the attractive restaurant which has a huge deck area for eating under the stars . We were only staying overnight so really weren't bothered with all the other facilities the hotel has to offer -golf, swimming, game rides and walks, etc - but they are all there so check the website. Some rooms are set up for people with disabilities.
Walkways through the gardens lead down to the Treehouse bar where you can sit high over the river and watch for game - hippo were playing about when we were there enjoying a long sundowner.

To be perfectly honest, I found Serenity Lodge to be just too much of a good thing. It is extremely luxurious, no expense has been spared in its construction and the level of pampering of its guests is amazing. That all this effort and expense is laid on for a tiny handful of people anywhere makes me somewhat uncomfortable - here in South Africa, I found it almost obscene. Having said that, if luxury and pampering are what you are looking for, Serenity will fit your bill perfectly. Six thatched rondavels tucked away into the forest provide guests with everything they could wish for in terms of creature comforts and seclusion. Beautifully constructed timber walkways connect the rondavels to the main building where there is a splendid al fresco bar, dining area and small swiming pool. Dinner and breakfast (both included in the price of your stay) were delicious and the owners certainly do everything possible to make your stay memorable.
The setting is spectacular. High on the side of a mountain ( visits to the top can be arranged -the views extend over Swaziland and all the way east to Mozambique) and deep in the forest, you really are in a world of your own. Watching a little genet feed was very special as was waking up in the morning (having slept with the blinds of the rondavel open) to the cool, green light of the forest and the early morning sounds of birds and insects . Weaver bird nests -Lower Sabie by TheWanderingCamel The little bungalows we stayed in at Lower Sabie Rest Camp are older and considerably more basic that the one the night before in Berg-en-dal. However, the setting was lovely, overlooking a sweep of lawn down to the river, the air-conditioning was bliss after a long, hot day and it was clean and quite comfortable. There were no cooking facilities in the bungalow itself so we opted for the restaurant buffet - which was very, very ordinary - but the deck where we ate is high over the river and we had sat there earlier watching a family of hippos playing in the water as a big herd of buffalo came down to drink, which more than compensated. There is a wide variety of accommodation available at Lower Sabie, from basic tent and caravan sites through a range of huts, safari tents, bungalows and cottages to a large guest house.

A spacious, comfortable room under a thatched roofed cottage, a cosy 'pub" bar for pre-dinner drinks and a hearty country meal in a reassuringly old-fashioned dining room all made our night at Sandford Lodge a real pleasure. An early morning walk next day - Easter Sunday -watching the mist rising from the river and walking to breakfast to the sound of handbells chiming calling people to church in the garden was lovely. Breakfast was a fine spread and we went on our way very satisfied indeed. The tariff includes dinner as well as breakfast. Sandford Lodge has been doing this for its guests for over 100 years and there's no reason to suppose they won't go on doing it for a long time to come. Braai time by TheWanderingCamel The bungalows we stayed in at Skukuza were rated "luxury" and they certainly were very, very comfortable, well finished and fitted. These are the newest accommodation units at Skukuza, built with views of the Sabie River and private (outdoor) kitchen facities. Whilst it was quite a long drive through the camp to get to them, there was, in fact, a short path giving access to the shop, restaurant, and administration area. Skukuza is the biggest of all the park rest camps, and the admin headquarters. Like all the other camps we visited however, it is very well laid out with plenty of space for everyone staying there. Three swimming pools and a 9 hole golf course are available to guests and there are a variety of games rides and walks also on offer. The restaurant is huge and somewhat cavernous and gloomy (South Africans really love to eat in dim -romantic? - lighting).
It is absolutely the rule in the parks that you MUST be in the gates by the given closing time. Watch out for the signs as you come towards Skukuza - there are a couple of entry points to the camp. We were cutting our timing fine and missed the first turnoff,. Imagine how we felt when we turned a corner and were confronted by a very large and very cross bull elephant right in the middle of the road! I have to say - I have NEVER been more frightened in my life. He was so close and he was huge and coming straight for us! Some very speedy manouvring got us away from him -and we were so glad to see those gates. We were late but the warden let us off without a fine. We needed a stiff drink and a relaxing evening after that escapade - our little rondavel was just perfect!.

Exquisite! This five star hotel at the time cost just £70 pppn, the standard or room was fit for even the most discerning travellor, it was like a penthouse suite with a bathroom fit to serve a King. Service was brilliant, food was wonderful. The decor is superb
Fantastic gym, pool to match and a great advantage is that the hotel can lead straight down into the shopping mall, Nelson Mandela Square and the cinema too.
