    Kruger park

  • Kruger accommodation typically consists of chalets with twin beds and en-suite accommodation mostly with air-conditioning. You can arrange more budget accommodation with consists of a bed, freezer and fan in the room. Then of course you can go camping as well. Personally I prefer the more northern camps such as Mopani and Letaba as there is fewer people there. However there is also less animals to be seen in the north as it is drier. If you only have a few days and need to see as many animals as possible, go south, anywhere from Satara camp down. My favourite camp in the Kruger is Mopani camp, great service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Also has a lake at the camp providing excellent birding and a chance to see elephants, hippo and crocodile from your chalet. Pure bliss...

Some camps are very commercial, with all the luxuries you might need.

Others are very basic, with paraffin lamps and basic, rustic accommodation.

All camps have their own flavour and charm.

The luxurious ones will have spas, posh restaurants, swimming pools and all the luxuries.

A less commercialised camp might have a stunning rock pool and basic necessities. No frills but very comfortable.

KNP linen is very good and comfortable, no matter where you stay.

Safari tent accommodation: Safari tent accommodation

  • Being fans of camping, this appealed to us! It was a large and comfortable safari tent built on a raised wooden platform.

It is certainly not basic, with excellent linen. They are fully furnished, have a little balcony, braai area, fan for cooling, cooking utensils, plates, cups etc. and a fridge.

It is raised off the ground so the view is lovely, plus it's a far more 'pleasant' idea to be off the ground with all the creepy crawlies (especially the long slithery types!)... haha

    North Region: Letaba
  • Tip Rating:
  • Letaba is one of the camps that symbolizes Kruger the best. Well laid-out, quiet, clean & well-run. The restaurant is situated on lookout over the river, and makes for an excellent sundowner location after all-day game drives.

  • The view from my accomodation! - Kruger National Park
    The view from my accomodation!

As you drive further north in the Kruger from Satara the fauna changes and Mopani tres start appearing until pretty much all the vegetation becomes Mopani trees! This is where Mopani Camp got it's name!

I liked this camp, it was spacious and the accomodation was nice!

Great views if your accomodation is facing the dammed river! At night with a powerful torch you can see the crocs eyes reflecting the light as they patrol up and down the river! Also at night you can here the Hippo out there!

Another great thing are the birds! There are hundreds of beautiful little birds on the trees around the huts! If you cook they all come round you! They can be pretty noisy too! It's nice to see them as you relax!!

There is a swimming pool here, but I never made it there as I was always too busy!

    Satara Camp: Satara Camp
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Satara camp is situated around the lower middle of the Kruger park and it is one of the biggest camps! Unfortunately this means there are a hell of a lot of people about, when the park gates open at 6 am there is a queue of cars and you are more likely to run into other cars during your drives. Also some of the other people in the camp are quite noisy! Saying that I had probaly the best sightings around this camp and overall I was happy with my time there! Personally I would try to book into the smaller camps first, unfortunately there was some kind of UNESCO conference in JoBerg at the time and the Kruger was pretty much full!

The buffet dinner is good, probably one of the better buffet style dinners I have had! Mostly we had BarBQ outside our 'huts', which was great! Each hut has its own fridge and BBQ! Just lock your fridge at night as the Honey Badger may try to get in there!!

Roaring Lions! You can hear the lions roaring in the middle of the night! Even though they are a few kms away! Apparently this camp is a good base for lion sightings! This was certainlt true while I was there!

    Motorhome holidays: Camping
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to see the parks is by motorhome or 4x4. Go on your own and not one of these organised tours.( people organise your life every day....One your own you can do and visit and drive where ever you want. So you will not be jammed because 15 cars of tour operators are all looking at the same animal (most of the time lions or hippo's)

    the whole park is unique

Safari tent accommodation: Safari tent accommodation (interior)
  • Tip Rating:

  • Safari tents - nothing fancy, but practical, clean and it IS as comfotable as ever!... :)

Up to 4 people can sleep in this tent. All KNP linen is provided, but I usually bring my own facecloth and an extra towel anyway

Dining is only a short walk away at the rest camp restaurant or cook on your own braai (BBQ). Each safari tent is positioned to provide maximum privacy.

Bushveld Camps: Bushveld Camps in the Kruger National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are nine Bushveld Camp in the Kruger National Park : Sirheni, Talamati, Maroela, Crocodile Bridge, Balule, Tamboti, Bateleur, Shimuwini, Biyamiti. Bushveld Camps is smaller, more remote camps. There are no shops or restaurants, but are all within easy reach of larger restcamps with these facilities.

Balule is a small camp comprises six rustic three-bed huts and 15 sites for tents and caravans. Without shops or restaurants, the camp is ideal for persons seeking solitude. There is no electricity - lanterns are used. When we were there the Hahinas & elephants were m from the fence at night! Bit scary but an experience!
