Djuma Bush Lodge: 'Great choice' Djuma..
Great choice and definitely a camp I had never heard of before. The three chalets were nice and my husband and I were given the honeymoon chalet with an outdoor shower and huge bathroom area. The staff was nice, although the actual manager was away during our stay there. The food was very good and the grounds were beautiful. We had GREAT game rides - thanks to Piet (who was on his last game drive and moving too Singita) and Andrew. We saw all of the big 5 and also arrived right after four lions killed a kudu which was an amazing sight. The Rubbing Post spa was nice - wonderful massages and extremely reasonably priced as compareed to what we are accustomed to paying. We all liked the tour of the local villages of Dixie and Utha and were especially impressed at the spirit of the people who lived there even as they live without electricity and plumbing in their homes. Only recommendation for Djuma is that I would probably prefer that drinks be included, rather than charged separately. The staff that worked there were all some of the nicest people we have ever encountered with a genuine interest in pleasing the guests. Would definitely return to this camp!

Great choice and definitely a camp I had never heard of before it was recommended by Island-Safari. Pretoriouskop: Rest Camps in Kruger
This is the oldest Rest Camp in the park, it lies in a high rainfall, hilly area. This is a good place to spot white rhino and Sable antelope.
The first tourist hut in the park is here, the Wolhunter.
We enjoyed this camp for it's basic rondaval type accommodation, it's 'home' in the bush quality.
It is basic but it has everything you need to freshen up, rest, eat and drink and it's clean.
There is a restaurant and a shop, even a museum which is worth an hours viewing.
Just a small tip for those of you who live in fear of the gawgaws (insects),if you really don't want to attract them, make sure you turn off lights whilst away from your room, if you don't you might find yourself faced with a door crawling with a variety of them waiting to come to bed with you. Michael found he always took that bit longer to reach the room than I when he noticed we had left lights on and had visitors awaiting us.....fortunately one of us finds insects in Africa a natural phenomenom not to fear.
It's also a good idea to shake shoes out in the morning before putting them on and if you do find a bat or similar in your room try throwing a towel over it to catch and remove it.

Djuma and Vuyatela: Luxury and Leopards
Vuyatela is a small, luxury lodge with 5 star accomodation in only 8 suites, in Sabi Sand Game Reserve. It has plenty of wildlife, knowledgeable rangers, excellent food and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
The lodge and suites overlook a waterhole where you can watch the animals come to drink from the terrace or your plunge pool. The main lodge has a tall bird-watching tower, a gym, internet library and lounge bar. The food is excellent and you get a four course dinner as well as a full cooked breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and regular snacks!
Vuyatela has superb game-viewing - including the 'Big Five', cheetah, hyena, jackal, myriad buck, giraffe, zebra and lion. This is the best place I have been to for seeing leopards. And the boundaries to main Kruger park are unfenced which means the animals roam between.
The sister lodge Djuma is closely involved in the local village and has daily tours to the nearby communities of Utha and Dixie, about 10 minutes beyond Gowrie Gate. You can visit the local school and learn about the customs and traditions of the local people with a Shangaan. The "Africam" web cam is situated overlooking the waterhole and on one of the safari vehicles to record animal sightings throughout the day and night. Africam is a very worthwhile project and needs support - for more info go to www.africam.com
Vuyatela / Djuma has been awarded the rare Fair Trade in Tourism accreditation for its work with the local community.
Unique Quality: The best shots and views of leopards are here and the privacy means you don't see any other vehicles - you mostly have the place to yourself and the other guests.
They organise a really good wedding too!

Arathusa Safari Lodge: A very good high end value for money
I found this lodge through internet, in the luxurious safari lodges, category "under US$ 300" (there are categories going up to "over US$ 500 per night", but I'll pass it. This lodge is located in the Sabi Sands reserve, and maintains the tradition of luxurious safari experience: 2 rides in open-air jeeps of 3 hours each, limited number of 10 bungalows of good size and confort, manicured gardens, view on a small dam where elephants and hippos come to drink, good food and all the frills like the sundowner in the bush, diner around an open fire, a.s.o. I have tried before other, more expensive reserves, and am wondering why should I pay more than here. Arathusa has everything of the other lodges, and the game viewing is a spectacular. Of course I could complain that the bungalows are slightly worn out, that the new Chef lacked some experience in cooking the lamb, that there were mostly French tourists (not a problem to me, as I speak French as well), but I won't as the end result was so spectacular.
Unique Quality: Our Ranger was the most sympathetic and competent in finding game, like mating lions, hyenas with cubs.. you asked, he found it (OK, radio helps...).
To complete the experience, ask your agent to fly Federal Air, they organize shuttles from Jo'burg through Skuzuka with a change of plane (going to smaller ones) up to the field of your lodge. Not much more expensive than taxi, and a millionaire feeling.

Kruger Park Lodge at Hazyview: Near to Kruger Park Reserve
We spent a delightful week in this superb collection of homes, lodges and a restaurant complex.
It has animals running free within the expansive grounds such as Impala, Monkeys etc. It feels like you are already in the real national park before you leave your accommodation!
To really set it apart from any other accommodation you are likely to find it has its own Hippo pool on site with a vantage point to safely take photos and video from. You can spend literally hours just watching the large number of hippos frollicking around in the pool and while you are in complete safety. During your walks in the huge grounds you often see Impala sometimes Monkeys and various other animals of a non dangerous nature!
It is just superb.
Unique Quality: The wild animals roaming free around you yet you and they are safe from serious predators.
The Hippo pool on site with super access.
The site is very secure indeed and once inside you feel completly safe from any threat! Animal or Human.

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate: Best Hotel outside Kruger
The service at this hotel is exceptional. I rate this the best hotel i've ever been too because the food is great, there's a pool, 2 River Boma's so that you can sit and relax and hear the Hippo's honking and great rooms.
Unique Quality: Well the great views of the river Sabie as well as Vervet Monkeys being on your doorstep as well as 4 Bushbucks right near the fence that separates the hotel from the park. For dinner you have a Braai (BBQ) under the stars while you listen to the Hyena's cackling. You can order game drives at the hotel and their guides are exceptional, we found a Leopard in broad daylight relatively easy. All in all a great hotel and i recommend this highly.

Mala Mala: The very best private game park reserve
To quote the VT question "Would you recommend this hotel/accomodation to someone else?" DEFINITELY!!!!!!
Without a word of doubt, this was probably the best place I have ever visited for hospitality and accomodation that I have ever been to and considering that we have travelled the world and stayed in a fair few high quality hotels, then this is really saying something. It's not cheap (circa $500 per night) but you literally want for nothing and you get the chance to go out on game drives upto 3 times a day.
Mala Mala is a private game reserve that runs along the edge of Kruger National Park. It shares a boarder that measures 19km (12 miles) that is totally open and free for the animals to cross from one area to the other. However, the reserve is totally private and people from Mala Mala do not cross into Kruger and vise versa.
Unique Quality: When you arrive, you are allocated your own ranger and they will look after you for every minute of the day from sunrise to sunset. They will serve your food (if you want), go out with you on game drives and share their knowledge of the bush and animals and still find the energy to sit down with you at the end of the day for a drink and chat and evening meal before walking you back to your accomodation (just in case there are any stray wild animals in the compound! I have always wondered what they would do if they came up against a leopard or similar because they never carried any guns while in the camp).
The evening meal is something else. It is held seated around a log fire, under the starry African sky, in an african styled reed enclosed boma. The meal is buffet style with a selection of meats from Venison to beef to Zebra (yes, Zebra). After you have gorged yourself on food and drink, the cooks and serving staff then entertain you by singing and dancing away the evening until it is time for you to go to bed.
