Malelane Sun Hotel: Hotel with a view

The Malelane Sun Hotel is situated right at the entrance of the Malenane Gate entrance to Kruger National Park and is on the banks of the river that creates one of the boundaries of the park. Because the hotel is right at the gate, when you go on game drives, it takes no time at all to start see wild life, albeit not always one of the Big Five.

This was all part of our travel package so I have not idea what it costs.

Unique Quality: The major selling point about this place is the viewing deck that lies on the bank of the river, over-looking the park. You can use this viewing area at anytime of day or night as the whole hotel is totally surrounded by security fencing and it as safe as any place can be when you are talking about the wilderness of Africa. The viewing deck has a bar during the main times of day and evening and it is extremely pleasant sitting there, sipping a cocktail, watching animals wander by on the other side of the river. Even at night, if nothing is moving, torches will still pick out the eyes of crocodiles as they float by in the river.

The hotel itself is pleasant enough. The food is plentiful but not necessarily inspiring but, to make up for it, the staff are extremely tentative and helpful.

The rooms are have all the basic utilities, including an air conditioning unit which I can see would be put to good use, at certain times of the year. Clean and tidy, I had no problems with the room apart from a largish gap under the main door under which a few creepy crawlies could come in. Didn't really bother me but as my better half was concerned, we got round the problem by putting our suitcase in front of the door. Not sure if it worked but at least I managed to get some sleep without someone constantly waking me up about imaginary bugs in the room!

For other pictures of the view from the deck, please see the associated travelogue.

Savannah Private Game Reserve: Savanna Private Game Reserve

This camp is in the heart of Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. It consists of the main house plus 7 separate private dwellings, all accessible by private paths. 3 of the dwellings have private plunge pools and all have a terrace outside with table and chairs where you can sit and take in the magnificent view over the savannah. They are built in such a way that you have total privacy and feel that you are the only person within hundreds of miles. The silence is amazing. Each dwelling is brick built with a tented roof and is large, consisting of double bed, seating area, desk, bar etc, open planned double bathroom with sunken bath, separate shower etc.

The main house has a communal dining table so that you quickly get to meet everybody, as well as a bar and large open-air upstairs room with a library and board games.

You are taken out morning and evening on open-topped jeep game drives lasting about 3 hours and can expect to see lots of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, giraffe, rhinos, buffalo etc etc. There is a rule in the park that only two jeeps are present at a viewing at once, therefore you never feel crowded or rushed. The animals allow the jeeps to come within a few feet of them and take little notice of you. They are not scared by the noise of the vehicles or the people. Don't be surprised if you find yourself sitting in the jeep under a large branch with a leopard a few feet about you, or in the midst of a pack of lionesses with cubs suckling and playing in the dirt.

You can drive there or fly in to the private airstrip from j'burg.

The staff are very friendly & knowledgeable and the accomodation & food is excellent.

Unique Quality: When you come back from the afternoon/early evening game drive you will find that the staff have run a bath for you and poured you a glass of sherry.

The game drives are amazing and there is something very special about stopping in a clearing, watching the sun go down whilst drinking a gin and tonic.

Idube: the only place I stayed :-)

Amazing. Private game reserve with beautiful grounds in an EXTREMELY remote location. They cook all your food for you there (done by locals - and done WELL). You are taken on two safaris per day. The first you leave in the very early morning while it is still dark. And the second you leave and get back later at night. In the middle of the day you can go on a guided hike, or just relax at the pool. There is something to be said about waking up from a nap and walking to your sliding glass door to see a family of monkies just doing what they do only 5 feet away from you. Or a warthog grazing by your shower. I could sit here and recount a thousand stories.

Unique Quality: Remote location. Excellent service. Great food. Good guides. Good nature viewing. We saw every animal we could (and many, many more) except cheetah. Although another vehicle from our group did see them.

Gomo Gomo Game Lodge: Game Reserve

Gomo Gomo is a small game park that probably only has room for approx. 30 people.
The facilities are basic but you want for nothing in my opinion. Good food, wonderful guides and very acceptable accommodations.

Unique Quality: I enjoyed the tents being close to the river. It was great waking up at 5:00 AM with the hippos snorting outside and the hyenas wailing off somewhere far away. Love those jungle sounds. I also appreciated the "Sundowner" which was taking a break from the rigors of looking for animals and having a drink of your choice. Very civilized.

Skukzua

Least favorite camp was Skukzua, because it was commercial, busy, loud at night, too big and the safari tents were close together compared to the other camps. It was a good way to end our trip though, because on the sixth day we were tired of driving/sitting in a car and Skukuza offered walking trails, three swimming pools, and a library/museum to look in, basically just a larger area to roam around!

Rest Camps

In the park there are different types of accommodation and the prices vary depending on what camp you stay at.

Camping: Sites for caravans or tents most have power and some have own water taps.

Hut: Single room units with communal kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Safari Tent: Permanent canvas tent bedrooms on permanent platforms. Most have communal kitchen and bathroom facilities and some are fully equipped.

Bungalow: Single bedroom units with bathroom. Some have communal kitchens while others have own kitchenette.

Cottage: Single bedroom units with living room, bathroom and kitchen.

Family Cottage: Multiple bedrooms with a living room, bathroom and kitchen.

Guest House: Multiple bedrooms and bathrooms with lounge area. Some have bar facilities and exclusive views.

Bush Lodge: Private lodges with multiple rooms and bathrooms.

Rates differentiate between camps and depend on if you have perimeter or river views, kitchenettes and so forth.

Unique Quality: While at KNP we stayed in huts, bungalows and safari tents. Our favorite accommodation was the safari tents at the Tamboti camp, because it gave us that authentic safari feeling! Tamboti was also our favorite camp for accommodation, because it was a small, quite, private camp nestled in trees and offered us both a perimeter and river views.

NGWENYA LODGE: NGWENYA LODGE

NGWENYA LODGE is located on the banks of the Crocodile River which forms the natural boundary between the lodge site and the famous Kruger National Park.

With the exception of a few development sites along this river, most of the opposite bank consists of the Kruger National Park and some farmlands where sugar cane is cultivated.

Accommodation is provided in luxury air-conditioned one, two and three bedroom facebrick thatched lodges, which are fully equipped (Satellite TV, towels, linen, cutlery and crockery) and is serviced on a daily basis. Each lodge has its own braai facility and carport.

The probability that more land along this river will be zoned for resort development in future is remote, because the available land is extensively used for agriculture and the National Parks Board of South Africa opposes any new developments along the borders of the Kruger National Park. This implies that the Ngwenya resort site will probably be the last new resort location along the boundary of the Kruger National Park.

There are no game fences between Ngwenya and the Kruger National Park and the Crocodile River forms the only physical boundary between these two areas. This feature surely places the resort in a rather unique situation. During winter months, when the flow of the river is at its lowest, wild animals such as lion, buffalo and elephant have been known to visit the premises or wander along the river bank directly in front of the resort. Ngwenya also plays host to hippopotamus which have found dams on the resort a better home than the river itself.

For first time visitors to this part of the country, the climate may vary from temperate during winter, to warm and humid during the summer months. The relatively high humidity is caused by the fact that Ngwenya is some ninety kilometres away from the Indian ocean with its warm Mozambique currents.

Mopani: Kruger Park Camp - North

On the banks of the Pioneer Dam lies the parks best kept secret; a unique rest camp nestled amongst the koppies with Mopani trees and a huge gnarled old baobab tree in the heart of the camp.
