Malelane Sun Intercontinental: Full service hotel

Numerous hotels are located in the park and just right outside the gates. The Malelane Sun Intercontinental is located just outside the south side of Kruger along the banks of the Crocodile river which forms the southern boundary of that area. The hotel features a deck that overlooks the river. Viewing of crocodile and/or hippos from that deck is a daily occurance.

Unique Quality: The hotel also has a nightly buffet which features fresh game along with African favorites.

Mopani Camp: Mopani Camp

As you drive further north in the Kruger from Satara the fauna changes and Mopani tres start appearing until pretty much all the vegetation becomes Mopani trees! This is where Mopani Camp got it's name!

I liked this camp, it was spacious and the accomodation was nice!

Unique Quality: Great views if your accomodation is facing the dammed river! At night with a powerful torch you can see the crocs eyes reflecting the light as they patrol up and down the river! Also at night you can here the Hippo out there!

Another great thing are the birds! There are hundreds of beautiful little birds on the trees around the huts! If you cook they all come round you! They can be pretty noisy too! It's nice to see them as you relax!!

There is a swimming pool here, but I never made it there as I was always too busy!

Kruger park

Kruger accommodation typically consists of chalets with twin beds and en-suite accommodation mostly with air-conditioning. You can arrange more budget accommodation with consists of a bed, freezer and fan in the room. Then of course you can go camping as well. Personally I prefer the more northern camps such as Mopani and Letaba as there is fewer people there. However there is also less animals to be seen in the north as it is drier. If you only have a few days and need to see as many animals as possible, go south, anywhere from Satara camp down. My favourite camp in the Kruger is Mopani camp, great service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Also has a lake at the camp providing excellent birding and a chance to see elephants, hippo and crocodile from your chalet. Pure bliss...

Malelane Sun: Luxury in the African Bush

This hotel was luxurious in every way. The rooms were comfortable and beautiful. The grounds were amazing as was the culinary offerings. There is a viewing platform that actually strattles over in to the park allowing for amazing viewings during the day and evening all while sitting in luxurious seating with bar/tea service surrounded by a large open hearth. At breakfast out by the pool herds of elephants walk by while playful monkeys play along the thatched roof tops of the hotels unique rooms.

Unique Quality: Great Views along the Crocodile river via a luxurious viewing platform.
Gorgeous grounds including a wonderful lagoon style pool, beautiful umbrella covered seating areas overlooking breathtaking sunsets and wildlife.

Mopani Camp: Game Park Swimming Pool

After our late night out with South Africa's 'Big 5', we found the going a little tough the next day - especially as it was the hottest one yet! Following our morning game viewing excursion, by the time the noon hour sun was in full flow, we had to retreat to Mopani to cool off in their great swimming pool!

Unique Quality: This is a very well landscaped pool and, although the water was a little warm, it still felt very refreshing after driving around the dusty roads in our non-airconditioned car! Also, it was very peaceful. There was only one other family there, a mother with her two children. In conversation with her, we found out that she too had previously lived on the Zambian Copperbelt where we had, with her husband working at the copper mines in Chingola!

Mopani Camp: Watering Hole View

We had a great time at Mopani. This was a newer camp, located in a more northerly and drier region of the Park. On our first night there, as we were sitting in the bar area enjoying a drink as the sun set, we met up with a great bunch of South African guys - it turned into one of our most memorable moments (see Nightlife!).

Unique Quality: Mopani had a couple of features that we enjoyed. Firstly, the main restaurant/bar area was located above a watering hole with a great boardwalk/balcony area that could be enjoyed for viewing the game attacted to the water. It also had an amazing swimming pool - this came in very handy as this Camp was noticeably hotter than Satara had been. As with Satara, the rondavel was absolutely first class - we even enjoyed the iguanas and lizards running around outside the next morning while we ate breakfast! We paid a total of 480 Rand or US$62 per night for our stay at Mopani.
