Experience warm South African hospitality in this gracious, 4 star home, circa 1912, filled with charm and style. Enjoy the comforts of spacious elegant bedrooms where high ceilings and wooden floors offset crisp linen.
A full, mouth-watering breakfast, is served in a lovely room, where a log fire will warm you in winter
The Langeberge offer a backdrop to the sparkling swimming pool and garden. Explore the historical town and sample its restaurants and many attractions, mostly within easy and safe walking distance.

Unique Quality: Friendly hosts with lots of attention to detail.

Very comfort guesthouse on our travel along Route 62. Great breakfast!

Montagu Guest House: Malherbe Guest House

Now this is good. Seriously good. Oh yes. So good, it's just ridiculous. The rooms gain a gasp when you first go in - huge, beautifully furnished, just..well....perfect. The kind of place you just don't want to leave. Ever.
The rooms are almost indescribably good. Big, comfy bed with perfect white linen duvets and sheets. Huge thick old walls with gorgeous wooden shelving set into them. vast bathroom with all the fittings 'just right'. The rooms just ooze atmosphere.

There are rooms in an annexe, but we suspect that the two we had were 'the best'.

The real attraction of course is that you can sit on your butt and see one of Montagu's oldest homes, marvellously preserved with minimum renovations. If I had an old house, this is what I would like it to look like inside. Come to think of it, I *do* have an old house. I want t to look like this!

Outside, it only gets better. The courtyard garden is secluded, shaded and just.....zzzzzzz.......oops. Fell asleep in the chair, sitting in the sunshine flickering between the leaves. Wind chimes, crunchy gravel, slightly wild, bees, birds, peace.....zzzzzzz.
If I had a geren, this is what it would look like.

Unique Quality: The only ever-so-slight downside was that out kids (13 and 11) felt a bit over-awed by it all. The owners had been just a little tiny bit fazed over having children ("Hmmmm. We don't normally have children under 12"), but were ever so pleasant when we actually turned up.

However, having seen how many children treat property that is not their own (we have a house rented out as gites in France), I don't totally blame them, I suppose.

In the end the kids loved it as much as we did...for their huge bathroom, the wonderful beds and the swimming pool.

The Malherbe gets the 'five box' rating from me below, and I don't think I have ever given this high a rating before.

Rietvlei Grove Farm: Plum Cottage

Plum Cottage is a small self catering cottage on a working plum farm. There is a double bed downstairs and two single beds in the loft which is reached by a ladder (not suitable for very small children). There is a basic kitchen, no stove but there is a braai on the patio. It is very quaint and charming and set against the Langeberg mountains. We paid R275 a night in season.
