Good suggestions

by talkin

Hi Folks! I'm planning a trip with grandparents and two teenagers and would welcome suggestions. We plan to fly into Port Elizabeth Dec 21st 2005. We would like to spend a few days in or around PE (Almost a local, right?) and then drive south to Cape Town, taking our time - get there by Dec 27th to meet up with friends. What would you recommend - restaurants, game parks, sights, excursions, places to stay (B&B looks good), people to meet. Any ideas for Christmas day would be really welcome!

We should wait till Colin_D sees this thread - he is the Port Elizabeth specialist.

But here is a little-known fact: Port Elizabeth is further south than Cape Town! If you don't believe me, look at your maps, or at this website for example:

Hi Colin,

He wants to take a SLOW drive to Cape Town and get there by the 27th - don't you think that he should be having his Xmas dinner near George/Oudtshoorn?

Mwellll having grown up in Grahamstown (2 hours away) I don't have much good to say about Port Elizabeth!

However, if you intend to drive back west to Cape Town, and you're looking for a place to stop halfway, then Swellendam was great--one of our favorite B&Bs from our whole trip was there (the Old Mill), and there were two fantastic restaurants.

The B&B: http://www.places.co.za/html/7494.html

I'd say spend less time in PE and use that time in and around Cape Town and the wine region!

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I have already followed up on them all. Never realised I have to travel North from Port Elizabeth to get to Cape Town! Colin, you are clearly in the know. All the places you mentioned look good. And dmcourtspahr, please let me know how your trip goes. I'm a VT convert!

Travel Tips for Port Elizabeth

TOWNSHIP TOUR.

by PEE-WEE

Port Elizabeth Real City Tour: The purpose of this tour is to inform tourists of the city's history and to narrow the divide between wealth and poverty that still exists. The Calabash guides will cover the harsh reality of the Apartheid past but also focus on the successes of the present, such as the thriving township artists and community run schools. The tour also covers the history of the settlers and ventures into the 7 townships to the north of PE, that together house 400,000 people.

Donkin Heritage Trail

by mvtouring

Explore the rich heritage of South Africa’s history. The Donkin Heritage Trail is a 5km walking trail in the old Hill area of Central Port Elizabeth that links 47 places of historical interest. The upper part of the Trail has useful pedestrian signage, as well as blue staggered lines, which have been painted on the pavement to orientate tourists along the self-guided trail. (Books are available at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism's Donkin Reserve Information Office at a cost of R18).

The Friendly City

by dejavu2gb

Set along the magnificent shores of Algoa Bay towards the south eastern coast of Africa lies Port Elizabeth, better known as "The Friendly City".
The city has much to offer tourists, from long stretches of golden sandy beaches, to wildlife experiences.
Thanks to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean its a mecca for many sun seekers and those who enjoy watersports.
