Good Comfortable budget hotels
by Anjan123 about Road Lodges & Formula One
When travelling to South Africa, check out the Road Lodge hotels at various places. These are located conveniently to many locations, airports ec. and are reasonable. Should cost you approx Rand 290 for a room for 2. Rooms are small but the hotel is clean , got Aircon and heaters and safe. They also have pick up arrangements from airports etc.
Another good chain is Formula 1 hotels which cost Rand 240 per room. They do not have pick up facilities but have taxi's nearby. For a first time vistor, suggest Roda lodges. Safe , Clean , Reliable

"Capetown"
From day one to the end Capetown region was fantastic. Stayed at the Road lodge near the airport first night. Worked out 20 Euro PP. We were happy with it. Moved to Bettys Bay in hired car the next day. Thank heavens for Sat Nav. The coast road from Somerset West was spectacular. By the end of the holiday we had picked up the S.A. use of the word 'stunning' although we hadn't the emphasis in the right place.Found the driving around Capetown to be very easy, traffic manners were better than we were accustomed to at home ( dare I say ). Did the usual tourist things, ie Table mountain, V.A Waterfront Kristenbosch Gardens . I recommend the Red and Blue route tourist Bus, good value and the headphones lets you know what you are looking at. Very impressed. Watched the Irish France match with Eugene in the Dubliner pub Long St (The ladies stayed at home ). At the start of extra time we were planning to go looking for match tickets for June 2010. Then came Thierry henry's double handball which everyone in the world saw except the ref. Threatened to delete my photos of the new stadium at Greenpoint. Visited the Kyayalitha township, was not on my original 'to do' list and would not be again either. Mama Africa's is a must do really enjoyed the food and the music. Hussar's restaurant on Exhibition Tce. excellent and Dale Court Guest House off Exhibition road I could not recommend enough.Found the prices and value for money very good. Never had a problem with security nor felt in any way threatened. Would we come back to Capetown- absolutely

Im am just curious- you want to stay near the airport for approx. two weeks?
Where our airport is situated - is not really ideal to stay - in fact i think that the closest hotel is about 10 minutes away (city lodge)- there MAY be one on the premises of the airport- , but may i suggest staying elsewhere- bearing in mind that the airport is only 20 mionutes from the CBD/waterfront.

Ok I know what you talking about and yes it makes sense. We will be there fore the AAD show and we work from Thunder City. If there is accommodation close by it will help us.

Nearest "hotel" the Road Lodge (part of City Lodge group) 600 meters from Arrivals. No restaurant - takeaways from the garage next door.
Next nearest hotel is City Lodge Pinelands 12km
Practical choices for people working there for 2 weeks are the guesthouses/B&B's in Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Strand. Transport is relatively easy - out of the congestion. The suburbs of Kuilsriver, Brackenfell, Bellville, Parow also have some nice guest houses, but there are some rough patches there too.
A popular choice with my colleagues was http://www.straightwayhead.com/ but they are also getting a bit too luxury.

Hi Gerald
Thanks for the info I will use it. We are the crew for the Mirage 3 CZ (Black Widow). The budget is very tight on these trips so yes I think we will go for the Road Lodge. We will have a vehicle to go and by food. Is there any restaurant at the airport? The other concern will be security for the vehicles. How far is Thunder City from the Lodge?
Thanks
Louis

Thunder City is 2km from the Road Lodge. There are restaurants in the airport terminal, one of them being a Spur. Parking at the terminal is expensive, but you could walk there from the Road Lodge.
There is a businessman's pub in the nearby industrial area "The Landing Strip" with good pub lunches at good prices. (The coffee is Ricoffy, unfortunately). Only open 5 days a week, not at night.
Parking at the Road Lodge looks secure - try and park in view of the reception desk.
