East London to Port Elizabeth
by priyavsinghs
Hi,
we are a group of 14 driving to Port Elizabeth from East London on 16th Oct and we plan to spend the weekend of 17th and 18th Oct in Port Elizabeth and we are already booked for Addo Elephant Park safari on 18th morning.
My questions are-
1. Are there any interesting things to do along the way from East London to PE?
2. When in PE, what are the must do things? the most done things in PE but also more importantly, any off the beaten path things we must do?
Thanks upfront!
Priya

Hi
It would be great to visit Addo, you can also visit Grahamstown, which is abot 120km before PE, and not too far before you reach Addo.
PE has quite a bit to offer - but to spend enough time in Addo. I am from PE originally - if you want, I have a page on PE with some tips that could help.

2010 - FIFA - World Cup

The new stadium for the Soccer World Cup is almost completed in PE. It is a beautiful building and will function as a multi-sports arena after the World Cup.
It is built at the North-End Lake, which makes it a beautiful setting.
As you fly in to PE, it is amazing how big this stadium is compared to other buildings you see from the sky.
This is a great addition to PE's sports facilities.
The lighthouse

The lighthouse goes by two names. The Hill Lighthouse & Donkin Reserve Light House
The lighthouse is located in the Donkin Reserve, a public park that overlooks Algoa Bay and the city of Port Elizabeth. The original settlement of Port Elizabeth was named in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, acting governor of the Cape Colony, in honor of his wife. The original lighthouse tower was raised by 31 feet and substantially altered, acquiring its current Art Deco look. Before the light was discontinued in 1973, its focal plane height was 255 feet. A tourist information center is now housed in the former keeper's dwelling, and the tower is open to the public.

ADDO ELEPHANT PARK,A MUST FOR ELEPHANT LOVERS!
by PEE-WEE
Port Elizabeth is often just the starting or finishing point for the Garden Route, but has more to offer than just a bed for the night. It has interesting museums and historical town tours. Once you have made it all the way to Port Elizabeth, you might as well go that little bit further east and visit Addo Elephant National Park - an absolute must for elephant lovers!
