The Fernery: An Interesting and Scenic Place
As you can see from the picture, The Fernery is quite remote. You drive down a gravel/dirt road off the N2 for 6 kilometers. And some of the other vehicles using that road are clearly unencumbered by the potholes, etc. as they are barreling along.
Given the remoteness, it is a good thing that they do a 4 course gourmet dinner each night in the Lodge. If staying there, book the meal each night. There are a couple choices for each course, and the choices were different each night we stayed. They offered some excellent wines with dinner, as well.
Breakfast is available for a fee, but we were always in too much of a rush to get out the door in the morning and on to our adventure, so went with breakfast bars.
One day we had lunch in the "restaurant", which is in the fern business structure (which also houses the office / front desk. It filled us up before the hike, but was nothing impressive.
Now, on to the actual lodging. There is a "lodge", which is where we stayed, and what is shown in the picture. Great deck, views, has a pool and hot tub and a grate room area (where cocktails are served before dinner) with fireplaces. The bathroom in our room was the biggest bathroom I have ever encountered that was not in someone's home - and it was 2 - 3 x the size of most people's bathrooms in their homes. Shower, jacuzzi tub, 2 sinks, and a toiled in a separate little room.
They had a computer, but their internet access is spotty and we did not use it. Service was out for a while when we were there, as I think was the power as well. I'm attributing that to the remoteness of the location.
The beds were comfy, and the standard coffee/tea service was in the room, along with a mini fridge with items for purchase. We had a delicious bottle of Sav Blanc from the fridge one night before our before-dinner drinks :)
We used laundry service, but I'm guessing its not common, as they looked at me kind of strangely when I asked what to do with the items I wanted laundered. This was also partly due to the Lodge not having a "front desk" of sort, so if you need something, you just go get someone in the kitchen :)
There are also private Chalets, which look nice, but were out of our price range.
This would be a great place for a couple. It probably wasn't the best choice for 2 friends who could have benefited from some nightlife :) But it was beautiful.
Unique Quality: The Fernery is one of the most unique places I've stayed. Unique in that Lodging of guests is not the primary function of the property. The property is primarily a fern farm. Ferns from The Fernery are shipped all over the world.

Storms River Rest Camp: Log cabin on the rocks ~ great for honeymooning :)
We stayed in one of their log cabins that sleeps 4 people.
There were only two of us, so we were comfy!
It is self catering, nothing fancy, but clean and cosy and has everything you would need.
Towels are white and fluffy, and cutlery is shiney (something I always look at!). There are mugs, plates, dish cloths, glasses, kettle etc. anything you might need.
You have to provide your own food and extras.
This park is very popular and you need to book way in advance!
The first photo is the interior, and the second is a collage showing the exterior

Backpackers Rainbow Lodge: Cats, Dogs, Bugs, and ADD Host and Hostes
I have to say this place really grossed be out. The kitchen was always dirty and their cats are climbing on the counters and the dogs are always at your feet. Roaches are climbing around in the sink which is probably full of thawing meet for tonight’s braii. The owners and the two young assistance are constantly running around doing god knows what. I have never so many adults with attention deficit disorder that extreme. God! Forget about relaxing.
The redeeming features are the satellite TV which was great to watch the finals of Euro 2004. Danny, the host, is really into sports. Otherwise stay at the Tube ‘N Axe Stormsriver Backpackers. I didn’t stay there so but it’s got to be better than this place.
Also to be fair the dorms are nice and clean with plenty of blankets. Stay away from that kitchen though.

Storms River Mouth Restcamp: Ocean front cottages!
Just meters from where the surf breaks on the rocks this is another chapter in the top locations we have come across on this trip. We could chose from different kinds of cabins. From our point of view, we found the "forest cottage" the best value, but there are also "oceanettes", family cottages and even honeymoon cottages...
The cabins come fully equiped, with limited cooking facilities but great beds and a cosy verandah with a barbecue. It is essential to book in season!
