Travelling around Durban Alone
by sairam12
Hi, I am in Durban for 6 weeks. I have come alone from india officially. I want to see places like Durban city, Ushaka marine world, Drekensberg mountains, National parks, beaches etc. during the weekends. Are there any scheduled tours that allow single travelers? I dont want to take a cab and go alone as it would become expensive. Any help?

I don't know about tours, but you can certainly rent a car and do all of these things yourself, for much cheaper than a tour (or a taxi) would cost. I did that when I was in Durban for a weekend about a year ago. It cost something like USD 90 to rent a small car for two days. I drove all over the place, including the mountains. There are good maps available and things are easy to find. Parking is not a problem at all in Durban.

Mate, I agree - rent a vehicle and do it yourself. You can contact the official tourism agency in Durban (http://www.tourism-kzn.org/) and they'll be able to advise on scheduled tours if that's what you'd prefer.
Durban City is a dump nowadays and not much to see. The City Hall, Playhouse, Da Gama clock and Dick King Statue on Victoria Embankment is about the best there is. You can have a look at the harbour and the beachfront (especially from north pier) as well.
However, my advice would be to head out of Durban to the Drakensberg Mountains (as you've suggested), as well as Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and the Greater St Lucia Wetlands in northern Natal. Some lovely coastal towns and villages up and down the coast as well, for example Umhlanga Rocks, Ballito etc.
Hope you have a great time and stay safe!

Go to the Golden Mile . Its a huge stretch of GOLDEN beachs that have warm sea's all year round. )St Lucia is very cool. Beware , Its very Touristy , But stil enjoyable.
Went to the Gateways Shopping center. AWSOME - if shopping for designer goods is yoru thing . Gateways will knock you away. ITS huge . Its almost adiferent world. Go see South Africa FIRST Wave rider , Its a man made wave , go and watch the Guys and girls surfing tubes while you have somthing to eat at one of the caffes (YES you did read corect) Gateways has an Awsome Skateboard park as well . Its fully digitized , so you can sit in one place and watch the action on one of the massive screens.
OHHH and YOU have to CLIMB the bigest indor Climbing rock in the Sothern Hemispere. ITS HUGE . Its scary. MY arms still hurt .. Will put up pictures soon.
Photo taken this year . Picture of one of the MANY crocodiles viewed in the Area(ST Lucia). NOTE how close people are to the Croc. Watching the sun go down off one of the many piers. The Warm sea between ones toes. The mist and rain near fields hill (a few KM inland from Durban)

Ice Skating is fun and a good team building sport. Kids would love it!!! It is not the best ice rink, but it is ok. The people are friendly and that's what makes it even more fun. It is about half the size of an olimpic ice rink. Dress warmly, after all, it is an ice rink. If you haven't got your own skates, you can hire a pair from the rink.
CROC PARK ---- FLAP-NECKED CHAMELEON
by LoriPori
While at the Croc Park, we saw many different critters like this little guy being held by the "Snake Man". I have identified it as a FLAP-NECKED CHAMELEON. It is almost fluorescent green in colour and has two toes on each of its four feet. He certainly was an interesting little fellow.
A drink with a view
by cleocat about The Beach Hotel
The verandah is the best place for a beer after a walk o the busy beach. The hotel has been around for years and the verandah has an ecxcellent view over the sea and the busy beach front. The breakfast is Ok and relatively cheap. The basic egg, bacon, saugage and chips. I was hungry and had some of it. Not too impressed but the rest of the family was happy and finished mine as well.
Traditional dance
by cleocat
Before the dolphin show starts you are entertained by a group of traditonal dancers. Zulu dancers. Kwa Zulu Natal has a very large Zulu speaking population. The dancing is accompanied by African drums and whistles. Very energetic dances.
