Sea Board Hotel Landmark Lodge

We stayed here over Xmas (in town for the cricket).

This hotel is no longer owned and operated by Protea Hotels having passed into private ownership.

It occupies a position in a very noisy and dangerous area of Durban (top of Point Rd) where it is unsafe to venture out after dark unless by cab. The concierge stopped us from leaving the lobby every night and insisted on calling one for us.

The hotel itself is dingy, dirty and dilapidated with unreliable lifts and sullen staff. The corridors and rooms are uncarpeted which means that sound echoes up and down the hallways making it very noisy indeed. The rooms’ air conditioning units barely function making it very difficult to sleep unless you open a window (this allows the cacophony from the streets below in so is of no real benefit).

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Like much of the area in and around the “Golden Mile” it seems to be in terminal decline. It’s less of a hotel and more of a rooming house.

Absolutely dreadful place. If you want to stay beachside in Durban pay more and stay up on the northern beaches.
